Shipping your car somewhere?

I guess this is more a general automotive question but still a newbie one

I think I read here or saw in one of the TT videos, some fella from Germany had his FJ shipped here to the US to participate in one of the FJ events. I thought that was really cool. But, how would you do that? I mean, other than arranging to have it shipped, what happens when they get it here? Can they legally drive it across the country with a German license plate? Or do they have to tow it everywhere and just drive it off road? Or get a temp registration card thingy to hang in the back window? And how much would it cost to ship your car to another country like that?

Anyway, just something I've been wondering

Re: Shipping your car somewhere?

K-Line shipping can help you with those questions. As they are a shipper and import broker. I used them when my wife and I moved to the US and brought our 3 British 1970's Mini's with and all our belongings. As long as you are not keeping the vehicle in the US, there shouldn't be any problems with DOT or EPA.
If you plan on importing to keep it in the US, then either you must have a gray market vehicle or one that is old enough to be exempt. I discovered this fast, when the DOT said I could not bring my '99 Lotus Elise. Lotus didn't make the car for the US, thus no gray market. I had to sell it, I was crushed.

Oh well, now I have a bad Azz FJ...

BTW: Total cost to ship 40' container with 3 mini's in it and our stuff From Switzerland to LA was about $4000.- incl. import fees. To the east coast is a lot cheaper. You can also do what's called RoRo(RollOn RollOff), which means your vehicle is driven onto the boat, no container.
