Which options

Hi Everyone,
I'm guessing a lot of what I'm asking for is covered in other places in this forum. It's not that I'm lazy, I just don't have very good internet access here (Iraq) I'm going home on leave in March, and I'm going to order my retirement FJ Cruiser so it is there when I get home for good. I don't plan on ordering many gizmo's and whatchamacallits, but I would like to know more about the performance options, specifically the quick throw tranny. What are the advantages to it, other than the obvious 30% shorter shift distance. Anyone get it and wish they hadn't, not gotten it and wish they had? What kind of HP boost do you really get with the trd exhaust, or is it really more about sounding cooler? Kind of the same with the air filter, any real gains on that? The other stuff I plan on getting is the conv. pack, all weather mats, arm rest and the rear door storage. Is there anything else that I am overlooking that I really should get. It will be a daily driver, with light occasional off-roading. Thanks for any input you can give

I don't know enough about this FJ stuff to answer your questions, but I can say welcome aboard and we're glad to hear you'll be coming home soon to a new FJ. Get home safely and thank you for all that you do!

Re: Which options

Like bambam I really can't offer much on your specific questions

(I do have the conv. pkg and think its plenty for what we need which is daily driving and mild off roading.) Do wish I had a compass and thermometer though.

I rally just wanted to thank you for your service and maybe someone posting will draw attention and get your questions answered.

Come on fella's I know there are lots of you out there that can help!!!

Re: Which options

Thank You, Calcote, for being a true hero.

Can't tell you much about the TRD short throw, but I've got the TRD performance cat-back and air filter. As far as I am concerned, the beneficial gain in the exhaust is simply in the deeper (throatier) note it gives you. I am relatively certain that the actual performance gain is negligible. I have driven several without the TRD exhaust, and I cannot detect any noticeable power increase in mine. I will caution you, however, that the exhaust sound with the TRD is quite a bit louder in the cabin. At around 2000 rpm, I can clearly hear the exhaust note above normal listening level music. This doesn't bother me, but I have read in other threads on here that some people have been bothered by this and had wished they didn't purchased the TRD exhaust. As far as the air filter, again, I'm not sure it has any real HP gain, but it does have the advantage in that it is reusable. You just wash it with water, re-oil it and you're good to go. Theoretically, you never have to pay for a filter replacement.

Hope this was helpful and accurate. Come home safely!

Re: Which options

Welcome!!!!

You definitely can't go wrong in getting everything on your list of goodies you have there, but as mentioned above, the exhaust and short throw shifter are more aesthetically pleasing than anything...They don't offer much performance gain, but for some, it's all about the short throw feel and grumbling notes

If you don't plan on modding your rig too much, but want a bit more off-road capability, I'd highly recommend getting the OF (off-road package) added...It will give you much better tires than the stock Dunlops right out of the box, and a better suspension as well...I'm a light weekend warrior off-roader myself, and the OF package has handled everything I can throw at it

Best of luck in your purchase, and God bless you and your brothers and sisters in arms out there...Get home safe so you can start getting that shiny new FJ dirty

DAN

search edmunds.com review

exhaust-useless, some said it sounds worse then the stock unit and is bigger which might not help offroad

for 2008 you have to get the convenience package, no base units, (the only package that makes sense to me)

good luck

Thumbs up Re: Which options

The performance upgrades are not needed as far as I am concerned. That 6 cylinder motor is plenty lively for my "spirited" driving style. It hops off the line. You will find that you need to hold back because the handling is not quite in the sports car arena.

Thank you sir for what you do at work.

Re: Which options

You need to make sure you get the locker - standard on the MT 4x4, an option if you get the auto tranny.

Personally, I didn't like the TRD exhaust - too loud!

Don't bother with the tire cover, the plastic running boards, or the OEM skid plate - all are cheap and flimsy. Get rock rails after-market, or predator Step Bars.

Good luck for the next few months - and thank you for your service.

Sandi
