TRD CAI vs. Stock with a K&N

Is one better than the other?

Do any of them make a difference?

Do any of them void dealer warranty?

Re: TRD CAI vs. Stock with a K&N

At this point, there is no "hard" data where someone ran a dyno in an FJ with stock air box, then another run with a K&N drop-in, then a 3rd with the TRD CAI. There are some posted dyno pulls with CAI (TRD and other) vs stock but they are different vehicles, and different configurations (MT and AT).

So, at this point, the "evidence" is only anecdotal. There are a couple posts of FJ's with Scangauges who are running snorkels with K&N drop ins vs TRD CAI showing very similar intake temps (1-2 degree differences) running together, on the same trail, sharing the numbers via CB. But, this only has bearing on the CAI value, not the "volumetric" value/differences between the two.

One thing of note, if it is a "value" to you, the TRD CAI does give a much different engine "tone" which many like. The K&N does not give this "feedback".

Personally, I run the K&N with a snorkel, in my opinion, the best CAI you can run. I can't see/rationalize the increased cost of the TRD CAI for what may be a minimal performance increase and some more engine noise at an additional cost of $350...

Re: TRD CAI vs. Stock with a K&N

I'd say just buy what ever you think you can afford. The differences in gains are likely to be so minimal that it falls with the standard deviation of error. Personally I'd probably buy the K&N and have a few bucks left over for something else.

Re: TRD CAI vs. Stock with a K&N

The one thing no one has mentioned yet is , you have to finish the job of making the FJ breath better by installing a good exhaust system. All I did was replace the stock MUFFLER(only) with a Magnaflow MUFFLER(only). Along with a stock intake and a K&N drop in air filter the FJ has better throttle response in the LOW end of the power band. I do not need a dyno, I can FEEL the difference! BTW, The muffler was about $110.00 installed!

Re: TRD CAI vs. Stock with a K&N

I did it all at once, headers, TRD CAI, and catback. Definately a difference

Re: TRD CAI vs. Stock with a K&N

I know what you mean about the engine sound. When I put a ztube with a KN Filter on my G, the sound was great at WOT. Maybe after I get some sort of Navi system I'll look at the CAI in depth.
