Re: FJ= best expedition vehicle?

I've done a lot of long off-road trips, most by myself, so dependability is an issue. My FJ has 57,000+ miles on it in less than 18 months, no problems whatsoever.

Careful with your dog(s) in National Parks, they are generally not allowed on any hiking trails.

Re: FJ= best expedition vehicle?

TIBAAL89-

The flat "aircraft carrier deck" style armor certainly does come in handy in rocks when you want so slide cleanly off the boulder you're hung up on. TCAO and I were joking on Saturday about how if he'd had less armor the last time he ran the Kokopelli Trail, he may have severely damaged both front lower control arms and perhaps CV's. Then he was running BudBuilt armor and dented it up very thoroughly. He's going to attempt it again with the newer light armor concept this summer and I plan to be there as well.

A road trip from here to there requires no armor at all. Driving traditional fire trails requires no armor either (the Sibley Mansion run we did together is a classic case-in-point).

The Kokopelli Trail Expedition is the classic "expedition" to me. It's 150 miles across beautiful landscape, river crossings, mostly road you don't need armor on, but some wicked break-overs and heavy rocks in a few places where you're on your skids and sliders, banging the #$%* out of the bottom. It's those few places that I have armor for. Without armor will you make it without damage? Doubtful.

Again, how much armor depends on what you plan to do.

My goal is to come home. It's a very simple goal. Nothing elaborate at all. My build-up is constructed with that end in mind. I think that's a good rule of thumb. With deference to SHADOW-WARRIOR, I think that's what he wants to do as well. How you go about that process of planning and implementation is the question.

I am building with "expedition" in mind. I want to go many places, remote and not so remote, and come home in the end, with my rig and a few good stories.
I believe in some armour, in just the right places. I have seen my skids, and they have a few good dents and scratches. I believe in the suspension lift and the ARB bumper and winch. When you need it, you got it; and once you have it, you'll be surprised how often you will use it.
The FJ does have the features that make it comfortable, for me and the family, while climbing and swimming!
They do laugh at me where I work, until I pull them out of the ditch, climb over the spill piles and go where ever I please...

Re: FJ= best expedition vehicle?

I still think of expedition vehicles as the 2 links and the second as more for outside CONUS. There is another company in Europe that sells massive Expedition RVs that families take out for months at a time. Of course prices on these are a bit steeper than an FJ...or 5, or 10, or 20!

Re: FJ= best expedition vehicle?

My FJC is *THE* expedition ride for my trips through and across the Great Basin. The little gas tank is a pain, but it will be fixed as soon as I can get a second tank installed, and gas cans do the job, just in a less elegant fashion.

Re: FJ= best expedition vehicle?

Only time will tell how the FJC will stack up to some of the old standbys like the FJ60 and FJ80.

The more we all throw at it the quicker we will know. So far the FJ has held up well and has even saved my life on one occasion!
