Same question I have. I would like to get rid of the street dunlops for the BFG Ats at 285/70/17 if they will work without a lift. I went with the mini-me rack and took the top of the toyota rack off because I was always smacking the crap out of it. But anyways.....
Most feel 275/70/17 is the largest size for stock FJ that will not rub even when you flex the suspension. For the 3" lifts, if you chop the mounts, you can fit some 35s, but you will still rub a little on flex.

just adding to Tony, even an agressive 34" will rub...hint hint;-)
Depends on width. My 34 LTBs do not rub-even without a chop. It's 34X10.5X16. I'm too cheap for a chop so I picked a tire that doesn't need a body mount chop.

LTB 34's aren't really 34" either. My new set (34x10.5/16) is exactly the same OD as my BFG AT's and they're actually about 33.5". Not much difference between the stamp and the actual OD, but I think this will end up being the answer to they mystery of how the "34 inch" LTB's would fit without rub, while the thicker "33 inch" BFG AT's didn't... (it's not uncommon for tire stamp sizes to differ from actuals: I tested a Pitbull Rocker 37x13.5/17, and it never got over 36" when fully inflated).
I just installed 285/70/17 tires since the lift is coming in two weeks. There's a slight rub of the front tires against the back side of the wheel well under the right (wrong) circumstances. It seems to happen when I'm braking and turn the wheels to a certain angle. Full turn doesn't rub. I've only noticed it when parking, so I'll be pulling into parking spots very gently for the next couple weeks.

Thanks for sharing this as I have wondered about this size tire whether or not there would be any rubbing issues. Just take it easy until your lift comes in and post some pics after please.
