Question VVT-i ???

My lack of knowledge has no bounds.
What does the VVT-i stand for on the shroud of the motor stand for?

Re: VVT-i ???

Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) This system selects the ideal intake and exhaust valve overlap under all engine operating conditions. VVT-i virtually eliminates the traditional compromises between low-end torque and high-rpm horsepower. It also helps enhance fuel economy and reduces emissions so effectively that it eliminates the need for the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) emissions device.

Variable valve timing is the first part. I don't really know what it does though.

Re: VVT-i ???

I've been looking for the RPM crossover point but haven't had any luck finding it, does anyone know what it is?

It's not a fixed point. It depends on engine temp, throttle position and engine load.

Hmm...on the celica 2zz it was a fixed point, so what's the range?

Re: VVT-i ???

On the 1GR-FE only the intake valves are variable. Up to 50 degrees early and up to 50 degrees late so a variable range of 100 degrees on the intake side. The exhaust side is fixed based on the information I have seen.

By being able to adjust the valves opening and closing timing, the engine can produce max HP and TQ numbers while keeping exhaust emissions at a minimum (Tier 2, Bin 5) and provide decent mpg numbers.
