I saw some tire pressure monitors that you can screw onto the thread instead of the cap at Walmart. It will be green if above a set psi (ie 36 or 31), and red if below. Are these worth the $5 they are? Anybody with any experience with this?
We had a set on our Subaru Outback for several years. They worked reasonably well but would not show red unless the pressure dropped well below (~5 psi) the posted rating. Nothing replaces a quality tire gauge, but the pressure caps were better than nothing...which is what 90% of the cars on the road get.

I heard that if the tire pressure gets low enough or if the spare tire is missing that the advanced electronics systems aboard the cruiser will disable the vehicle...so you should make sure that you perform the "low tire pressure vehicle immobilizer--disabler mod" a.s.a.p. unless you want the vehicle to suddenly render itself in an impromptu non-operational condition due to low or no tire pressure. I'm sure you can find someone out there who can do the basic wiring involved but you should have no one but a certified toyo tech to preform the required re flash of the ECM...doing otherwise could void the warranty.
you're trippin' dude.....nothin' happens but a little tire light comes on....go wheelin' some day and you will see

Re: Tire Pressure Monitor

I have experienced this first hand and I was pleasantly surprised. We were on our way back from a weekend at Calico and after a few detours, on our way home, we decided to do a quick Cleghorn run when just as we were approaching the off ramp, I noticed the amber low tire pressure warning light. We (Me, Wife, Son and Daughter) exited the freeway and I inspected the vehicle. Sure enough the Rear Left tire was low and further inspection found a very large round metal object about 5/8" diameter imbedded in the tire. I changed the tire, got back on the freeway and headed home. The light never went out. When we got home, I removed the metal object which was deceiving as the actual hole in the tire was only 1/4" but the rest of this object that did not actually penetrate was larger. This was an excellent opportunity to try out the new ARB Tyre Repair kit and it worked nicely. In fact, it is still holding 40 psi one week later. Well as soon as I was able to re-inflate the now spare tire, bam, the light was off.

Why would this not be an excellent thing? Are you all aware of how many vehicle deaths and serious injuries a year can be attributed to low tire pressure? Usually in SUV's at high rates of speed and bam, a blow out. A little over correction in the steering and your vehicle is now like a shoe in a tumble dryer.

Trust me, this is a great safety feature. And it's in the valve stem, that is why they are made with a rigid alloy. I am wondering if this valve stem can be transferred to aftermarket rims. Anyone here know?
Myth of disabling your vehicle when warning is activated? Busted!
Myth of this being connected to all 5 tires? Confirmed
BTW, It’s a wireless transmitter in the tires or valve stems that sends the information to the vehicles onboard computer (per the manual)

Re: Tire Pressure Monitor

Yes, these tps sensors can be used in most aftermarket wheels. We have put them in various ProComp, Weld Racing, American Racing & Wheel Pro wheels and so far have had no problems.

Re: Tire Pressure Monitor

O.K., So I have a question on this..

There are a couple kits on the market

Orange Electronic Co.Ltd.

Tire Rack : Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

that actively display pressure and temp. These require sensors to be installed similiar to the factory sensors.

Only problem I see with this is that they are precoded for their locations, hence after a few tire rotations, you'll lose track of which is which on your little LCD.

So, does anyone know of a system out there that would allow you to update the tires location at each tire rotation?

Also, are these sensors affected by SLIME being added to the tires?

I'm actually bouncing around the idea of the CTIS like the Hummer has. Being able to air up or down without getting out of the cab would be nice. = SYEGON
