Question Special Edition OR customize myself ???

Hi, there's been tons of discussions and it is difficult to discern what is that you need to do. So I have to put my own question my own way.

Me: not for extreme off-roading, just want convenient package, descent look and be able to go anywhere (like I said - not extreme)

What I want:
-smaller rims (16" ok, prefer 15" but may be not an option?)

-nice tires: something like 33" BFG Mud is more than enough, but even standard 31" All Terrain might do

-some lift: 3" should be enough but not spacers, want a real, good quality

-rear lock? I don't know if I am in need of one, limited slip might do, but if the price is not extreme - lock is OK

What I have seen as options so far is something that confuses me: on one side there is Special Edition with 16" alloys and BFG All Terrains and on the other there is an option All-Terrain Package with BFG Rugged Trail (What !!! How could they?... Who needs Rugged Trail?). Both have Bilstein shocks and locks and the rest of goods.

So this is the very question: should I go with package or should I go with special edition or should I get the bare and install what I want myself (of course I will go to the shop to do that)? What is the pricing for the Special Edition by the way (package is extra $3,000+)
If not for the Rugged Trail I might just fall for the package, but something tells me I will be purchasing new tires before I know it.

Do the bilsteins offer any lift?

Can anybody give an insight?

Thanks for listening (sorry for being boring if you feel I was)
Nik

P.S. Did they discontinue Black Cherry color? Brick does not look as nice...

Welcome to the forum,
It seems to me you are going to do some modding, so its probably better to get your FJC bare. Get 4x4,diff lock,atrac convenience package. You will save some money.
Black Cherry was discontinued

Re: Special Edition OR customize myself ???

That was fast, thanks!

One thing I don't get: toyota.com lists convenient package "B" as:
================
Convenience package includes-Remote keyless entry system, Cruise control, Power outside mirrors with illuminated markers, Rear privacy glass, Rear wiper, Rear Intuitive, Parking Assist, Daytime Running Lights (DRL) and Back-up Sonar (CQ)
==============
which I do not believe is the one you mention as package 2.
edmunds.com lists options UR and UP, both having traction and rear locks. Are those the ones?
Both these options however require CQ which is essentially the package "B" as listed above.

Now pricing: packages UR or UP with CQ cost about 4,400 while Special Ed package costs only a tad more: 5,100 (yes, still 600 diff, but it is close) and it include 16" rims (which neither UR nor UP do: they go with 17").

Maybe I am still missing somethig?

Thanks,
Nikolay

Online is really confusing and i had the same problems when trying to find out what I wanted. I ended up just going to a dealer and telling him the things i needed. Def. get the 4x4 with rear locker, you can add atrac later. It will save money if you buy it bare and then add to it later. Good luck!

Re: Special Edition OR customize myself ???

Like everyone else said, get the drivetrain items that you can't easily or cheaply do yourself and then add suspension, tires, wheels etc on your own.

Re: Special Edition OR customize myself ???

Here's a question...

If I buy the trail teams edition and get rid of the plastic bumper... would I then need to toughen up the suspension for the added weight of a decent bumper with winch or are the bilsteins enough?

Thankya
