What does "stock" mean?

When somebody says a trail is suitable for a stock rig, what does that mean exactly? Especially when reading a site that is not truck specific. Is a jeep stock equivalent to an FJ stock? Does stock basically mean a flat boring dirt road? Does stock assume you were smart enough to get sliders when you bought the rig (I was not smart enough), etc.

Thanks in advance.

Re: What does "stock" mean?

Stock means no mods. A vehicle comes from the factory stock.

Re: What does "stock" mean?

I think it is referring to the FJ stock market value on wallstreet.

just kidding it means, for the most part, no major mods (tires, lift, bumpers, etc)
Most people think of a stock looking rig, as anything that looks stock from the outside.

I would say that on this and most FJ forums stock would mean an FJ with 4 wheel drive and A-Trac.
A stock jeep is not necessarily the same as a stock FJ. Depends on the model of Jeep.
A trail that can be run stock will probably not be boring. Remember that a trail listed as suitable for a stock FJ might have optional obstacles that are not passable in a stock FJ.
Check out some of the trail threads and you'll get a better idea of what a stock FJ can do. Look for some pictures of tibaal89. He is stock and runs crazy stuff.

Re: What does "stock" mean?

Additionally, stock friendly often refers only to the capabilities of the vehicle. When considering a trail, seek out input on potential desert pinstriping and such. Many stock friendly trails are not so friendly to your vehicles paint job, so if your rig is both SHOW and GO...watch out for them bushes.

Stock is the condition of most FJs before their owners become a member of this forum...

Re: What does "stock" mean?

Stock: what came from the factory. Not modified. If in reference to trails, then it means no mods in terms of suspension or traction.
