Independent Suspension?

Sorry if this is a real dumb question, but i'm clueless

So, FJ's have independent front suspension? Is this good compared to non-independent? It's one thing I was reading about on Jeep boards with folks saying FJ wasn't as good because of that... but, I was also reading a honda review where someone was saying the ridgeline had all independent suspension and that made it a great offroader...? So what's better? and why?

IFS (Independent Front Suspension) will give you a better ride on road and will perform better in high speed offroad driving.

SFA (Solid Front Axle) is stronger and will work better in the rocks and more extreme slow crawling types of wheeling.

It all depends on what you will do, but IFS can play in the rocks and SFA can go fast. You will need to way them and see what is better for your needs.

Re: Independent Suspension?

Ive had the 07 jk rubicon which is SFA i like the fj better. Better ride handles better, smoother, but the SFA is a stronger system.

x2 For a short wheel base vehicle though, I would have liked to have seen a SFA. Something about a short wheel base and going fast in the desert does not seem like something i want to be doing.

Re: Independent Suspension?

Ive got an old Range rover with solid front axles, and an FJ with independant front. Indipendant handles better driving on and off road. Solid axles are bulletproof. Both provide good ground clearence, some at better times. Having the differential up high on an independant works well when crawling over rocks on an even surface, while solid axles better on inclines or articulated.

Re: Independent Suspension?

I think Jeep "solid axle" has better hanling but Fj has better ride, they both fun to drive.
Less maint on solid axle because no CV boots.

Re: Independent Suspension?

Timkline all these comments are 100% spot on.

There are two distinct types of offroading. Fast, and slow. That sums up the solid vs. independent debate right there.

You will never see solid axle on an offroad race vehicle. The jeepers like to crawl slow through obstacles. It's just apples and oranges.
