1st Mods (around 5k)

Hey I've got a few bucks to spend, I would like to use this truck for what it is worth, safely and wisely!

somewhere around the 5k range... I'm thinking 5k should get me up on a good start!, feedback on experienced drivers and users would be greatly appreciated!

I have a bit of baggage off wheeling, i had a Rubicon a few years back and have had a few crash courses but nothing extensive.

thanks for the help!

Re: 1st Mods (around 5k)

i was thinking you meant 5k miles on the FJ, haha.

Depends a little on the type of terrain you will encounter.

First off, i would go 3inch lift (either adjustables up front or Old Man EMU all around)
Then tires, mud terrain if you plan to wheel couple times a month, all terrains if maybe once a month.
Next, i would replace the bumpers with steel.
Then, add skids if you will see lots of rocks.

Develope your plan first. What do you use your vehicle for? What's your budget? What are you willing to compromise? Have a upgrade path planned so you don't have to undo mods.

You don't mention if you have the MT or automatic. First thing I would get on the Manual is the TRD quickshifter and then some good sliders and skid plates. It all depends on what type of off roading you want to do but sliders and skid plates are some of the most basic things you will need and they won't detract from the safety of the car.

Re: 1st Mods (around 5k)

5,000 dollars will do about everything to a certain level...Prices below are approximate and not meant to represent actual costs today...but just to give a rough guess to guy.

1. Toytec OME lift kit about $700( springs, shocks, etc)
2. Full Budbuilt Skids $800 (including gas tank)
3. Budbuilt sliders $350 (ones with rear kick out
4. Demello Front bumper $1000
5. Warn rear bumper $800
6. Warn or Superwinch winch, non-integrated $400
7. Nitto Terra Grapplers or Khumo Mud Terrains, 5 tires for about $700-800
8. Scuba Mod $0.00
9. e-Locker Armor from Inchworm $75

These mods will put you under your $5000 limit and have you VERY WELL Modded...

Re: 1st Mods (around 5k)

Good list but I would steer clear of the Kumhos.....Up here they don't get much of a name....Super soft compound. One of the dealers told me that I would be doing really good to get 30,000km (18,000mi) out of a set of their AT's or MT's. Ask around to see but I have never spoken to anyone that would ever buy a second set.

Re: 1st Mods (around 5k)

yeah, i have heard they wear fast but in my experience 30,000 with Mud Terrains is good.... but that is why I have the Nitto Terra Grapplers........got 50,000 on my last set on old truck.

I was just giving him options...on good mods for fair price....for big impact.

Re: 1st Mods (around 5k)

The best advice I can give you, HOLD on to your money first. Take some time and really run your vehicle off road bone stock, get a "FEEL" of how well it handles and preforms. Put it through its paces. This will give you a good "BASE LINE" to start from, don't just run out and start buying stuff and bolting it on.

Put your money where it will be best used for your type of driving and terrian. Take your time and look at all the suspensions. This will help you in the long run, good luck.

Mike

I agree with this except for the skids. Buy you some Buds, you can't go wrong with them. Everything else you need to look at where you live and what type of driving you plan on doing. I live in the Alabama and here you need a good set of mud tires, skids and a lift. I need sliders for going to other places but not really necessary. I will also be buying a front bumper and winch. After that it all for show.
