I dont wanna steal your thread, but anyone know if its Okay for me to switch to synthetic with 40k on the clock? I'm not sure it the guy before me used synthetic oil or not, but I'd sure like to use it- unless of course its too late to switch. Anyone know for sure???
No worries, done it many times. Made the switch as high as 109,000 miles, no leaks, no problems.

I was just looking through the owners manual and it says the car uses 5w30 oil but it does not specify if the car comes with synthetic in it. The dealer told me it does but I knew much more about the car than the dealer so I'm guessing that may be wrong. I have a 2008 model. They told me to do an oil change every 5k miles. I think synthetic would double that. I'm sure someone out there knows more than the dealer and I would appreciate the info. Thanks!
That is correct beginning in 2007 Toyota started putting synthetic oils in the 4.0 v6 and 5.7 v8 engines. with MY2009 vehicles out, they also include the 4.7 v8, 1.8 4cyl, 2.4 4 cyl also include synthetic from the factory. Most of it beind 0w-20

Re: Synthetic oil?
If my 08 shipped with synthetic motor oil... it was the worst, most wore out synthetic I've every seen. It reeked of petrol and was black as "coalie's butt"! I replaced it with M1.. Ron

Man, I completely agree will you. I just changed out my oil out today at 1576mi. and it was the worst. Repalced it with Mobile 1. It didn't look that black on the stick before I changed it, but it sure came out that way. Also there wasn't metal shaving worth mentioning, but still would like to get a magnetic plug for it. I was also impressed for some reason with the oem Toyota filter. It just look engineered right, compared to the NAPA one I stuck on there.

Re: Synthetic oil?
I'm using the factory filter as well.. I bought a case of them. No metal in mine and I changed at 50000. I am replacing the filter at 2500 however, and it's still cheaper that the others.. Ron

Hi bcsfj,
May I ask where you acquired this information? Thanks, DEWFPO

To people asking whether or not they can switch to synthetic at a certain mileage, you can...but remember that it only goes well if your seals are in good shape. If you have a leaky seal (like a rear main for example), the leak will actually be worse with synthetic because synthetic has less viscosity than conventional oil.
About the mileage between changes; you can go up to 25,000 miles between changes with certain 100% synthetics. It's not the oil that deteriorates that quickly, it's the filters. You can re-use the same synthetic oil for up to 20k to 25k miles, but your filter needs to be changed at least every 5k-7k.
Also, for someone that does a lot of stop and go driving as their main style of driving; a full synthetic may not be the best choice. Typically a blended synthetic (a mix of dino and synth.) works better because the paraffins in synthetics as well as other chemicals will condensate more with stop and go driving than a conventional dino oil.
Just some things to think about. I've switched to synthetic on my 88 pickup when it was at about 185,000 miles, and no leaks...but only because my rear main seal had been replaced, as well as all other gaskets and seals in the engine where oil typically leaks from.
The last thing is; make sure you know what you're getting. Do some research on the synthetics you're looking at. A lot of times, what people believe to be full synthetics are actually not 100% synthetic. They can advertise as full synthetic only because the companies won a suit some time ago stating that as long as they had a certain percentage of synthetics in their blend, they could advertise only as a "synthetic motor oil".

you can switch at 2k at 40k at 35k....and then go back to dino oil for a year and then go back to synthetic.....but do the switch....and dont look back.
a good filter is the other half of the equation with synthetics...the better the filter the longer you can run without too many contaminants. Do some research and decide what brand is best for you and then get it done...

I switched at 300 miles to M1 with a M1 filter, I also changed the diffs to Royal Purple.
I asked my dealer what they recomended at th time, The tec told me they had NO recomendation for synthetic.
