Synthetic oil?

I was just looking through the owners manual and it says the car uses 5w30 oil but it does not specify if the car comes with synthetic in it. The dealer told me it does but I knew much more about the car than the dealer so I'm guessing that may be wrong. I have a 2008 model. They told me to do an oil change every 5k miles. I think synthetic would double that. I'm sure someone out there knows more than the dealer and I would appreciate the info. Thanks!

Re: Synthetic oil?

no idea what mine came with......but has synthetic in it now. I have not gotten enough miles for a change again but on previous vehicles (sports cars, diesel trucks, motorcycles) have gone 8-10k miles without a worry...

Re: Synthetic oil?

I think it comes with regular oil, but you can put synthetic in it. There is more info, if you do search for synthetic oil in another thread. Just don't switch back and forth between synthetic and regular.

A lot of owners in the thread use synthetic: amsoil, redline, royal purple, mobil 1, etx.
I am ready for my first oil change and am going with synthetic.

Re: Synthetic oil?

I'm 99% sure it comes with dino oil from the factory, Toyota never mentions it in any of their literature about the FJ, and many dealers use cheap bulk dino 5W30 when you go in for an oil service. You can move to any brand name synthetic whenever you want. 5K on dino oil is just fine, most all synthetics will go longer, some much longer.

Re: Synthetic oil?

My FJ just clocked 30K miles.Ive used Mobil 1 synthetic since first oil change, and I use the oil change reminder light as just that,a reminder that within 1K miles,I need an oil change. My oil is always nice and clean when I drain it.I know that doesnt really mean much technically, but I have seen some oils come out black and thick, and burned smelling after 5 or 6K.I replaced a timing chain on a Chevy I owned since new, with 400K miles and Mobil 1 every oil change,I was amazed the inside of that engine was clean! No sludge or burned oil buildup anywhere (my daughter still drives that truck, got somewhere around 500K on the drivetrain). Im sold on synthetic, esp.Mobil 1 .Great protection for a big investment,IMHO.

Re: Synthetic oil?

I dont wanna steal your thread, but anyone know if its Okay for me to switch to synthetic with 40k on the clock? I'm not sure it the guy before me used synthetic oil or not, but I'd sure like to use it- unless of course its too late to switch. Anyone know for sure???

It won't hurt to switch at 40k.

Best thing you can do! Even better now. I use a full synthetic 0-30W Mobil One with Slick-50 for the PTF'S. With this formulation I go to 7500 miles before a change. I could easily go way past this milege but I like clean insides!!!
