Body rips or bulge?? what gives?

Hey there everyone, well as some of you might know im still in the researching stages before purchasing an FJ. It seems that with the current polls that about 100 out of 700 have this problem, and thats just based from this forum alone. What are the adverse effects of this type of damage? People have reported that their stock FJ that is only used on the streets have this type of damage.

I know that almost all vehicles have some sort of problem but this just seems to be a real major one. The last thing I want to be thinking about is if my front end is going to fall just because im using the FJ for what it was made for, and thats offroading. Now I know I wont be doing any sorts of serious wheeling or solid axle conversions etc, but the fact that some stock FJs are getting this problem is somewhat nerve racking.

For those who do not know what body bulging/ripping is, please see these links

Do you have inner fender bulges / cracking??

Now who has engine bay body rips?

Engine Bay Body Rips

Body rips VERY discouraging for potential buyer

HAAHA naw it's purely cosmetic, it doesn't affect anything. well there are 2 that I know of that the hood and doors arn't lining up but out of the thousands of vehicles, thats not bad. also Toyota is aware of the issue and have been working on new designs, so far they are getting better. they are on the 3rd design now which is supposed to be the fix all as long as stiffer body mounts.

This is something you only see when you open up the hood. It affects an area that plays no role in structural support. It functions as a barrier and not much more. Granted, it could be unsightly if the problem is severe, but it's not a safety hazard. I have one little wave. I'm not worried about it.

Re: Body rips or bulge?? what gives?

FJ FunJunkie, do you know if they implemented the 3rd design on the 08 models? Or does your vehicle need to have the bulge or rip in order to get the revised lining?

Yeah Carbon it's good you're doing your homework. Us old timers were initially worried about it at first - and it was a big deal here when it first came out.

Since then however the dust settled and nobody even looks there anymore. As Junkie and Fjamming say it is pretty much cosmetic and a nonissue.

Most everybody here would tell you to strike it off your list of concerns. Hurry up and buy the *&R$%^& truck so you can go wheeling with us already!

I'm sorry I don't have an answer for ya on that but I would assume so. Probably on the later builds if so. I'm still waiting on a firm answer on this too. I will eventually get them replaced but for now it's just like a hemorrhoid, it looks ugly, only bothers you, and most likely nobody's ever gonna see it. lol

Mike,

Check in with daToy. Tomas tells me he is getting the new reinforced fenders.
Word from Toyota folks is that it won't be handled as a recall but on a case by case basis with no time limit. It you get tears or bulges, you get new fenders period.

The new fenders are standard on the '09's I've been told.

cheers,

dale
