So should I be doing this even if I have a TRD rig with a rear locker and A-Trac?
Yes. Left foot braking is just one tool you will use just as A-Trac and Rear or Front Differential Lockers are other tools you will use.

IMO, the way it should work for most situations is this:
  1. Normal trail driving with transfer in low, let A-Trac do its thing, just drive.
  2. If you are entering a rock garden or obstacle(s) with uneven terrain that looks like your vehicle will be coming down hard, begin using the Left Foot Braking technique
  3. If at any time you stop moving forward due to loss of traction, Stop Immediately and engage you locker(s) to overcome said obstacle, then turn the locker(s) off and continue.

Once again, this is my opinion and how I have successfully continued to wheel for over 10 years without ever breaking a vital component (rear Fox Shox aside)
