Aftermarket Roof racks. Do they exist yet?

I like the toyota rack, but its somthing like $600 aditional for it. I thought i could save myself a few bucks, buy just getting an aftermaket one a few months down the line. But since the FJ is so new, i haven't been able to find any. Am i looking in the wrong place?

This topic has been discussed in numerous threads. You could take a look at gobitoyota.com, this appears to be the leading aftermarket candidate. I placed more order for a Gobi Stealth last week. Good luck.

I waited 'til the end of my post to suggest the [Search] option

You were nice and helpful, but also didn't notice that this posting is to the Newbie forum where, I assume, you can't flame about searching.

The trouble you'll find is that if you don't like the Toyota rack (I believe it actually sells for about $450 from some of the sponsors of this site) then you really won't like the Gobi Stealth for $1400+. I haven't seen postings of other complete racks, but I have seen factory racks for sale from forum members. This might be a route for you.

That said, I expect to sell my factory rack in a few weeks after my Gobi Stealth arrives.

I'm waiting, hoping for a removable set of bolt on rails from Yakima or Thule. I want a temporary rack when I need it. I have yet to see one???

My rack won't be installed when my FJ comes in the next few weeks, told them to keep it off, new on the side. Will be for sale if anyone is interested... if you can wait a few weeks. I don't want it so I'll sell it to a fellow forum member below dealer's price and pay for the shipping out of my pocket.

Re: Aftermarket Roof racks. Do they exist yet?

Yakima has the FJ listed in its newest catalog, but nothing after that for parts. I'm sure that they are in the works. The factory rack is not that bad and there are a few different ways to add good crossbars like yakima. I just bought the 48" yakima bars and am putting them on the factory rack with stainless u bolts and locking them. I have a lot of yakima stuff from my last vehicle. I would just by a factory rack from someone who spent the coin on a gobi and go with it. The crossbars suck, but you can get around that easy enough.

Cheers

I did break down and get the GOBI rack. It is stout as heck, you can literally climb up there and jump around on it (and I’m no light weight). I like the expanded metal coverage of the entire roof, you can throw anything up there and not worry about it. They are also throwing in the rear ladder for free right now (at the price they are asking it seems like it should be free). I have no complaints except maybe a little more wind noise, but its built like a tank. I figure I’m going to keep this vehicle until the engine falls out so in the long run it will be worth it since I do a ton of camping/hunting/wheelin.

Where did you purchase the Gobi w/ free ladder?

Re: Aftermarket Roof racks. Do they exist yet?

I emailed Gobi today and got this reply:

"You can either get our Low Profile Stealth Rack OR our Full Size Ranger Rack. Both Racks are $1,499 + $199 s/h. Ladders are $299. You can view our products on our website at www.gobitoyota.com. There are specs and installation instructions available in .pdf format.

The promotion that we are currently offering is a FREE ladder with the purchase of the Gobi FJ Rack. "

So as you can see, you get the ladder from them for free right now. It is a great rack but that is too expensive for me right now. If I don't get one anytime soon, then I'll try to purchase a stealth in about 6 months or so.
