I think black wheels look sick on EVERY car. Not just 4x4's. Any vehicle i ever own will have black wheels. Just looks better in my opinion. I have never been a fan of chrome or shiny metal, even in relation to jewelry.

Black, White or any other color I could care less. The important thing is they are steel. Take your alloys out in the rocks and grind about 1/2 inch off the bead. Steel is harder and if you bend it you can bend it back enough to get you home.

aluminum here...........but I am getting a little black on the side some knarly MTs this year as backups. Keep Nitto TG on alloys for DD and most trails....but throw on the mud terrains for special runs. When Nittos run down will go back to a less aggressive daily driver tire and use the black steelies for wheeling.
the reason for me really though.....is I have seen the steelies bend and then get hammered out when running low pressure in rocks or when they hop and then slam down on a big rock. Alloys will crack with no chance of field repair.......with steelies you have an opportunity to fix it in most cases.

I have a BD that came with the Southeast BBS wheel option. I thought that they were too 'blingie' and installed factory black steelies. They fade due to the sun, but when I use the tire spray, i hit the wheels with the same stuff....nice and shiny for a couple of weeks. BTW....I HATE white letters out! That's just me though. The reason race cars have them out is to get a check after the race for advertising their brand. Give me a check, and I still wouldn't put the white letters out. To each his/her own...it's all good!
Welcome over to the FJ world!
For me the color is purely asthetic...The material is what matters.
I once hit a deep rut horizontally ( it was covered in deep grass) and I was driving too fast ( I was young and inexperienced) I learned then that steel wheels bend when hit hard and can be heated up and whacked back into shape. Alluminium wheels are more expensive to start with and thay break instead of bending...then you replace them.
And now a question...You asked if it was an "FJ thing" and then stated that is isn't a "Jeep thing".....What is it whith Jeep owners and their "Thing"....
I saw yet another Jeep the other day that said across the windshield that It was a Jeep thing and I wouldn't understand...
Jeep people are obssessed with their "thing", and that is what I really DON'T understand.
Us FJ folks don't have to flaunt our thing and advertise it...Our thing speaks for itself, quietly, confidently, and with complete class.
