Welcome over to the FJ world!
For me the color is purely asthetic...The material is what matters.
I once hit a deep rut horizontally ( it was covered in deep grass) and I was driving too fast ( I was young and inexperienced) I learned then that steel wheels bend when hit hard and can be heated up and whacked back into shape. Alluminium wheels are more expensive to start with and thay break instead of bending...then you replace them.
And now a question...You asked if it was an "FJ thing" and then stated that is isn't a "Jeep thing".....What is it whith Jeep owners and their "Thing"....
I saw yet another Jeep the other day that said across the windshield that It was a Jeep thing and I wouldn't understand...
Jeep people are obssessed with their "thing", and that is what I really DON'T understand.
Us FJ folks don't have to flaunt our thing and advertise it...Our thing speaks for itself, quietly, confidently, and with complete class.
I said "thing" on purpose because it is a saying, sadly, in the Jeep world.
After today, I am kissing that world today and stepping foot into the FJ world. I can't wait!! Good bye Jeep!

I went black both because of the utilitarian look and because i can simply spray over rock carnage which i could not have done with the factory wheels.
I sandblasted my factory wheels and bedlinered them. Copied an Xterra friend.
I use steel wheels to off road because they can be fix with a hammer if bent, or weld if need to. They are cheaper to replace if need to. Hard to fix alloy wheels. I ran white steel wheels on my cj-7 and fj40.

I switched to black steelies because they were cheap and because I didn't want to scratch my fancy and more expensive TRD wheels while wheeling. They also look better with the Hankook mud tires that I put on them than they would on the TRDs.
Still have the TRDs sitting in my warehouse, but don't think I'll be putting them back on and may put them up for sale (along w/some worn BFG ATs) soon.

im late on this post...but being a jeep guy myself my opinion is that all modified jeeps have either ClassicII's or black steelies...........kinda like OEM alloys and black wheels for the FJ... i have had both on my jeeps...so i feel at liberty to state my opninon
