WHile the pullpall FJammin mentioned is ideal, it is also expensive and large to store.
If you had a winch, and a shovel and were really stuck, you could do this: dig about a 4ft deep hole, attach the cable's to a tire iron and thread cable through the center of the spare with the tire iron on the other side. Bury the spare and cover with the sand. Now you have an anchor. Most times when you are stuck in sand you don't need that much of a pull to get out. If the spare starts to pull up, just bury it deeper.
...X2, this is a very practical solution. I've used it a few times on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Pullpal is a great accessory too, same comments- expensive and heavy but it works well. Get a winch, you'll thank us later
go with a winch bumper in case you want to add one later...being in Texas remember that you are "supposed" to have a front license plate, which could be used to cover that hole.
and I'll start saving for the winch.
