I just bought the FJC AT 4X4 last week after 6 years of driving a 2x4 4Runner. I'm seriously loving this truck so far.
I'm driving mostly inner city for now and trying to figure out what gear settings are recommended. I can't seem to even figure out how to switch the 4x4 gears yet. Yes I'm extremely new to this stuff. I've been driving with the MT in D and the 4x4 stick in N. Is that ok or do I have to drive in 4H?
Also When I start the engine if I listen very carefully without the radio or air running and the windows up, there is a very tiny but very sharp hissing noise. I told the dealer yesterday and the person said this is coming from the large power steering in the FJs and it is "normal". Has anyone else have this sound? I know I have really sensitive ears for noises in cars and I'm not sure if I heard this sound the first few days due to the awesome subwoofers and blasting my music initially.
Looking forward to trying out the 4x4 features sometime soon, and changing my oil at 1000.
Just leave the tranny in 'D' and the transfer case in 2H and you are good to go for your city stuff. The transfer case can't be in 'N' (neutral) or you wouldn't be going anywhere...
You do want to put it into 4H every now and then, as this will make sure everything is lubricated. Just don't do it on the pavement...
Not sure about your noise. Can't say I've heard it...

Ditto. Do the above and you will be good to go.
And, yes, there is a noise. I hear it too. There is also a noise when you step on the brake each time...kind of a little whoosh noise. Everything is electric in the FJ so there are some different noises to be heard.
As far as the 4wd shifting, get on a dirt road and drive along at a very slow speed and then just pull the 4wd lever straight back...it will engage 4H - 4wd. You can shift back out of 4H while moving as well. If you want 4L (low range) then you have to stop and put the tranny in 'N' and then you can shift into 4L. You must stop to shift back out of 4L too.
Have fun and go out and get that thing dirty!

It would be great if I had a clue, but let's face it, that's just not gonna happen.

If you cut the wheel to the right or to the left all the way, you'll hear the pump struggling against the locked steering assembly.

have been lurking for sometime ... i always told people if they bring back the FJ i would get one, and they did and i will.
at present i'm running an 04 unlimited with 6" lift and 35" BFG's.
locked at both ends ... truth be told i only really need that
kind of clearance and traction twice a year as i am for the most
part a desert wheeler ... so i am letting the LJ go and looking
to get an FJ i just built the wrong rig for my application.
i love the FJ in every way, great rig!
looking for a yellow one with a slushbox.
hope my input makes it to the mix, i will see if i get any responses?
