to solve the height problem, you could get these. They are quite pricey, but they mount on the top and then you pull on the kayak and the whole rack goes down beside (without touching) your FJ.

[Bajarack]

Hello Guys,

Here’s a picture of a Bajarack mounted on a Land Rover Disco 1 with Yakima crossbars and mounts for Kayak and mountain bikes.
We will take some pictures of the same setup on a FJ in the near future.
By the way this is the first look at the NEW Bajarack for the Disco.
