Hello guys, My jeep just ate another motor... and I have been wanting an FJ for years (when they came out) unforunetley my jeep picked a bad time to die...so I'm looking at the used ones
First off, I see the 2010s have a little more horse power and better fuel economy. What has been changed on the motor to acheive that, is it easy to duplicate on a previous model year?
I am looking at two 2007 models, one is an auto with rear diff lock, atrac, etc. It also has a ARB front replacement bumper with a warn winch, and what looks like some procomp wheels and tires, with 42k miles. It is listed for 24,900.
The other one (from the same dealer) is a manual, which is my prefrence because of the full time 4x4, and all the extra off road goodie they come equiped with. But, it is completely stock with 45k miles and is listed for 23,400.
Besides full time 4x4, what are some of the other pros and cons for auto vs manual?
Also, those prices listed seem to be about average for used FJs with that mileage...which seems high to me, thoughts?
I don't know about the HP increase but it's simple enough. It's also easy to loose a little HP if you don't run premium fuel. I run premium when I'm towing or playing but tend to use regular over the winter. You could probably chip the engine and get more HP but I don't see a need.
I like my manual just fine. Sounds like that one is set up same as mine. I would like a winch so I can self rescue but haven't spent the $$$ yet. But you never get the money back from mods when you sell. I'd pick my own mods from the forum and add what you want. Make sure it's done right that way too.
I did get the Toyota steel wheels for serious offroading since you can bend a steel wheel back if you need to. That's all I've done so far. Oh, I did get the OEM rubber floor mats. Love the silly thing. Climbs like a goat. Go for it.

Which is why I am looking for one with some mods done, because they are priced inline with a unmodified one. Although I don't want one with any serious mods like a lift kit... I want to make sure that is done right.
I'd go for the A/T with the mods if they are the same price. An ARB Bumper and a good winch will cost you $1500 to $1700 new plus the install.
I just purchased an 07 Blackcherry FJ with 28,800, MT, ARB front bumper, Warn Winch, running boards, OEM roof rack, XM Radio. I plan to install a Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT when funds are available. Where did you do the leather heated seats and at what cost? I traded my AUDI Allroad for the FJ and we have become comfortable with leather heated seats.

The one in the picture definitely has a lift, just so you know.

So do you A/T guys miss the full time 4x4 and other goodies?
I pretty much only use 4WD when I'm wheeling or the snow is a foot deep. The 2WD does great on the road and with TRAC on (it's always on in 2WD), you don't need 4WD unless you're in some thick stuff. So do I miss the full time 4x4? nope.
It looks like the AT is a good deal with the lift, wheels, bumper and winch. Maybe you can find out where the stuff was installed or if it was installed by the owner?

Re: Buying an FJ, questions.
I think the full time 4x4 is more wear on parts than actual benefit. If I need 4x4, I just stop and shift it in. The manual was super fun to drive though.... sometimes I wish I got the stick. But when I wheel, I love the auto.

Not sure i'm really "missing any goodies" with an automatic. i only use 4WD when i need to. Go with the automatic!
Sure you are. You are missing the throw-out bearing chirp and the weird RPM hang between shifts that we MT6 guys get for free. Poor poor you.... LOL
