Drove longer than normal after the low fuel light came on:

17.38 gallons pumped :surprise

Hey....at least I know I can dip below the E and still fuel on board

I drove from home down to Moab on a trip and I usually stop either in Dinosaur, CO or Loma, CO for fuel and this time I didn't. My light came on about 15 miles or so after I passed Loma and I kept going. I made it to Moab and filled up and it took something like 19.2 gallons. I drove for about 65-75 miles after the light came on. First and last time I did that.

yep, typically around ~4 gallons the needle is on E and the light is on, this topic is one that has been around and around the forum

I dropped my tank, took out the fuel pump and bent the arm down so it was half as far as originally, when sitting at the bottom of its travel from the bottom of the tank. Now mine comes on when only about 2 1/2 gallons left, making the light in mine actually useful. Yay.

The best fuel gauge I ever owned was in a Saab 99. That gauge read the actual amount at every portion of its travel and the light came on with exactly one gallon left, "pull over and buy gas now".

I have a maestro on a pioneer head unit and the distance to empty just reads 0. The actual real time mpg does work. I just assumed it wasn't supported in the ECU, but since you guys are saying scan gauge I think it's time to email Maestro and get them to update the FJ firmware.
Oh and for the record, I've let mine get passed E and never put more than 15.7 gallons even when I thought I was on total fumes. I don't bother with mileage. When I said hello to 35s I said hello to basically 1 ton truck mileage haha.

At least you don't have this issue... http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/foru...fuel-float-fuel-gauge-problems-post-here.html
My gauge is about 1/8th of a tank off... I found out the hard way. Now I fill up before I hit 300 miles on the trip ODO, otherwise I could be walking at any time.

Sad thing is it wasn't like that when I bought it (I have an 07, that I bought in 2014), so I had seen the light come on before, so it tricked me when the sending unit decided to never go below 1/8th of a tank again.

I always fill up when I get to about 1/2 tank It would drive me insane to be driving on empty. I couldn`t even tell you if that fuel light works in my truck its never been on in the 11 yrs I`ve had the FJ :)

Being both former military an also a cop, got in habit of filling up at 1/2 tank, as there could be many sorts of emergencies that I wouldn't like to cope with less than 1/2 tank.

Driving when gauge is near empty will pull sediment on bottom of fuel tank into fuel system, don't want that! Not sure of reason why, my gas mileage is 1-3 mpg better if I fill at half, rather than 1/8? Those of you who like living dangerously, recommend not relying on driving range numbers you see here, as things like carried load of people and thinks, flat/hilly terrain, driving speed, traffic density has big effect upon that range! We've all hear stories about some monumental traffic situation that caused tie ups for hours and would not want to be caught with low fuel for diminished ability to heat or cool vehicle.
