I suggest yo leave California before it falls into the Pacific! Chose Marysville, but in PA - it is close to Harrisburg, PA, Baltimore, MD, DC, and NYNY. Housing is sooo cheap and you have the beautiful Susquehanna River and Appalachian Mountains....

I know there are alot of choices, but these are places I can accept a permanent assignment. I need to know which ones would be cheap to move to, and any advantages, quickly. I like camping, hate traffic, but like to be wthin 2-3 hours of larger cities, places to do things on weekends.
Also, which ones should I remove from list due to high cost.

Angels Camp a little too boring.
Auburn 2nd choice but maybe $$
Chico college town
Edenvale ?
Eureka too wet, cold
Marysville
Placerville I like fishing and skiing so this is my first choice
Salinas if you like Monterey
San Luis Obispo cool but $$
Santa Rosa $$?
Stockton no different from Bakersfield
Ukiah same as Eureka
good luck

I will vote for: Auburn, Grass Valley, or Placeville.

Stockton and Modesto are pits. I would live in SLO. If you can't afford SLO look towards Atascadero or Paso Robles. Second choice would be the mountains. Anything north of SAC is nice but you are in BFE. If you have family you're taking with you and they like civilization, I would really think before taking them to the boondocks.

I have family in Mountain Ranch (very close to Angels Camp). It's frickin' beautiful in that area. Spent many summers down there. Placerville is nice as well. Get out of the big cities and enjoy the fresh air. Modesto and Stockton are plenty of city to get whatever you need...including car jacked!

Re: Need help finding a place to live that is cheap

If you want cheap, Stockton, Merced and Modesto are your best bets.

Housing in these places is VERY cheap right now. Foreclosures are rampant, so you have to be careful in what neighborhood you buy (you don't want to live in a foreclosure wasteland) or rent (you don't want to house foreclosed from under you). However, there's not much "work" in these areas, so you need to be retired, self-employed or willing to commute to a job in Sacramento or the Bay Area to take advantage of the cost savings. Quality of life is a relative issue. There's not much to "do" in these places, but it's a pretty good place to raise a family and there's lots of recreation available in the mountains and in the Delta, which are close by, and it's only a 2 hr drive into the City if you need a culture fix. There's also UoP in Stockton and the UC campus in Merced to go to for more intellectual pursuits.

All the other places on the list are either too expensive or too far away from anything of interest to justify the cost savings.

OOOH!! Now maybe you can help me. I just got a summons. Now while I am TOTALLY pro doing my civic duty (was the forewoman on a federal trial), now that I am a mommy with no childcare, there is no way. Plus the move to Germany...

Should I:

just postpone it?
ask to be excused based on the above?

And if they reject the request to excuse, can I still postpone? I know you can only do that once...

gracias!
For the love of God, RUN! Tell them you're moving to a foreign country.

I was between tours last year so had NO excuse and got stuck on a Grand Jury all of January. One day was particularly funny because one Monday we were hearing the case of Brian Bilbray, a local politician.
I'd just been to a party with him the previous Saturday night. He wasn't out of control but we were all tipping a few. You should have seen the look on his face when we came filing into the courtroom! Ha ha! Priceless. I gave him a little wink letting him know it was cool.

As for where to live, I'd contact the local chambers of commerce for a relocation package. They have ALL the demographic, economic, etc. info you'll need. Good luck! I choose Chico but that's because it's a college town. And Smokin' Mo's BBQ is there. SLO, too, has one but it's expensive to live there.
