Need help finding a place to live that is cheap

I know there are alot of choices, but these are places I can accept a permanent assignment. I need to know which ones would be cheap to move to, and any advantages, quickly. I like camping, hate traffic, but like to be wthin 2-3 hours of larger cities, places to do things on weekends.
Also, which ones should I remove from list due to high cost.

Angels Camp
Auburn
Chico
Edenvale
Eureka
Marysville
Placerville
Salinas
San Luis Obispo
Santa Rosa
Stockton
Ukiah

Just kidding.

No, I left it on the list, but I've got a feeling it is expensive. I rent, so have no equity. I've been saving to buy a house, but imagine I will be I will be renting for a while.

Re: Need help finding a place to live that is cheap

Based on what you have said here are my picks:

1. San Luis Obispo (although housing can be a little more on the pricy side, you can find it cheaper if you look) - Awesome town, little traffic, great camping places and beaches!
2. Placerville - Cheaping housing, near many many many camping sites, fishing sites, 4wd trails, and lake tahoe. 30 Minute drive to folsom for pretty much every thing you could want to buy.
3. Angels Camp - Cheap hosuing, great camping, not sure what larger city is close by.

Thank you, I will try those cities, and Modesto is a big enough city for me

I agree with his 3 picks. But again, from the other thread, you have to decide if you can live with the cold in A.Camp and Placerville. BEAUTIFUL areas. The A.Camp area has a growing wine region.... so it's no longer just a "hick town". You know about the jumping frogs of Calaveras County, yes?... that area has a LOT of history. Google pictures of its Main St -- right out of an old Western flick.

Re: Need help finding a place to live that is cheap

Okay, I just posted my bids. And the winners are.
Auburn
Placerville
Angels camp
Chico
Merced
Redding
Modesto
San luis Obispo

Some are a little more expensive than others, but I have a 18' trailer if need arises. Thanks for the help. I would not have known which to avoid otherwise. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, there is one opening in Bakersfield, but I will most likely have to move.

PS. Sorry about the double posting, this was a time sensitive questian.

Re: Need help finding a place to live that is cheap

Wow, you are brave and did that fast. I was hoping MuddyGrrl would chime in... I was going to tell you to PM her (and cc the people that might have her cell phone #!). She knows the Bay Area and it is her job to "get around"!

The list looks good. One thing I thought of while showering was that traffic around Auburn and Placerville is worse than A.Camp, with all the yahoos going to Tahoe. But I guess you will survive that. It can be especially bad on winter weekends.

We just had some bad back to back storms, so if you could somehow get a live web cam of these areas, it's about the worst case scenario right now in terms of snowfall.

Merced
Redding
Modesto

I'd take Redding!!!!!!

Merced could be all right though, now that there's a UC campus there. young chicks for you.

Re: Need help finding a place to live that is cheap

Thanks for all the help. These are all bids so far. When I find out what the finalist are, I will need more help narrowing them down. Hopefully, I will have several choices. I will PM muddy, I have a couple of weeks to do a little more research. I would have had a couple of more days to search, but I was on jury duty, so this came as quite a surprise.
