Bald Mountain: This popular OHV route is the only route on the district that is open year-round. The route is accessible from the south by taking Dinkey Creek Road east from Shaver Lake and at approximately 9.5 miles turning left on Rock Creek Road (9S09). Go north on Rd 9S09 for 3.5 miles to start of the route. Staying right at the first two intersections will put you on the more challenging lower loop. Stay left for the most direct and easier route to the top of Bald Mtn. To access from the north take Hwy 168 above Shaver Lake to the Tamarack Snow-Park, travel along Rd 9S09 for 3 miles to the intersection of Rd. 9S02. Take Rd. 9S02 south and you will come to the north trailhead in less than 10 minutes. This route is known as the "easy way" to the top of Bald Mountain. Stay right at the first intersection after the trailhead. Many high clearance trucks can reach the top going this way. Left will take you to the lower loop.

I can't make it, but, as a native San Franciscan, I've always thought of Fresno as more SoCal than NorCal, mainly because of the northern access to Sequoia National Park via Fresno and my mental association of Fresno with Bakersfield father to the south. SoCalers probably consider Fresno in NorCal, because of the southern access to Yosemite and fact that Fresno is on about the same lattitude as Salinas/Monterey. Now that I think of it that way, there must be some pretty great 4x4 roads in the foothills and mountains around Fresno.
Anyway, geographically speaking, Fresno is actually on the borderline between north and south, so, it might be a good idea to also post this inquiry on the SoCal forum to see if there might be some interest in your run down there as well. Have fun!

I'm in for at least one of those days. It's my father's B-Day that weekend and I can't think of a better way to spend the day! What level of trail are you up for?

I grew up in F-no, I always thought of it as central-cal, now I live in nor-cal.
I am a virgin, new to 4x4 but used to buz around near Shaver in a baja bug. My FJ is stock so nothing too hairy.

Anybody know what the "easy" trail up to Bald Mtn is like?
I am up for something more challenging as long as there are more knowledgeable people in the bunch that can lead he way. I'm stoked by the turn out so far.
DocME, I know you want to check out more trails in the area, did you have one in mind?
I actually have ran Bald Mt. a number of times, It's a great, straight forward trail. There's a few different areas where trails branch off to play areas (on trails) and the look out at the top is unbelievable. I'll dig up some pics and post.
A stock FJ CAN make it to the top without too much trouble, if any. With a spotter there's no question you can make it with OUT any trail scars. The trail can be ran in an afternoon or evening and is well worth the trip. A modified FJ can take the more difficult routes and definitely have some fun.
Bald MT. is only ten minutes outside Shaver and would make it ideal for those thinking about coming in from out of town.
I'm in for the trip, I probably won't camp this time but I could do a sat & sun event because of my home's proximity to the trails (Visalia).
