[hi jack]
Damn I miss that area. I grew up on the mainland just of off Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. OK, well, I'm glad I don't LIVE there anymore. I would like to visit sometime.
You are not required to have a hi-lift, just a jack. BTW - I hope you washed the heck out of your underside after doing that bath in salt water!

There's a little fun to be had:
Might be able to run down one of the days. It's $70 for a year pass plus $20 yearly park entrance fee. Minimum park required equipment is shovel, hi-lift jack, 12x12 board, tire gauge (possibly tow strap don't remember). I was able to get in the first time w/o paying park entrance fee by asking to go get the off road permit. You need to go to the national side.
You are also required to have something to put under the jack so that it doesn't sink into the sand. I carry a board but plastic and metal pads are also allowed.
The puddle was probably rain water on one of the side trails, not as bad as sea water but it still has some salt in it. I always wash down my rig (especially the under side) after an Assateague run. There is one of those DIY car washes on Race Track Road (RT 589) about a mile North of RT 50 in Pines Plaza.

You are required to have a lift that is capable of lifting a wheel clear of the sand should you get stuck. I don't think the bottle jack that comes w/ the FJ doesn't have a chance. In reality your chance f getting stuck is slim, unless you are stupid. Your chance of being stopped and checked for equipment is also very slim. The first day I went out, I didn't have any of the supposed required equipment as I had only had the truck for two weeks.
The day I went through the puddles I spent $10 in quarters at the Jiffy Lube DYI carwash mentioned above. The water in the puddles is rain water and other water that has seeped through but I am sure that it has it's share salt in it. Currently only two side trails are open (as far as I can find) The rest are closed for hunting.

The bottle jack that came with my Trooper is also too short so I carry a length of 6x6 in addition to the board. If I need extra height I just put it under the jack.

This was the same in December the last time I went out. They also had a portion of the beach closed. I plan to take a ride out there this weekend and will post if things have changed.

Just got back from Assateage. It was in the best shape that I have seen. Hunting season is over so there were lots of ponies and some deer. I was just one other rig on the beach and none on the side trails so there weren't many ruts. Perfect.
The entire beach was open as were 4 side trails (all are located past the Bull Pen). Be sure not to miss the two that do not have names and are only marked by tall posts.
Tall Marker 234 -- Nice place to view the bay side.
Tall Marker 253 -- Long frozen mud hole
The beach itself is a combination of hard sand that I was able to drive in 2WD and very soft windblown sand that required 4WD. There was also some debris that was fun to play with.
Sorry for no pics but the camera that I keep in the glove box was completely dead. I should have checked the batteries.

I am driving to O.C. on Saturday (2/17) morning. Arriving about 1:30 p.m. After hotel check-in, I plan to go straight to Assateague. We should be there by 3 p.m. I am also going back on Sunday (2/18) not sure of time, prolly shortly after breakfast.

The wife and I will be there also, not getting in until Saturday evening (I have a class until 3:00p) so we will not get out to Assateague until Sunday. We are going to eat at Fager's Island on Sat. night.

I have a bowling for autism thing Sunday morning but might meet you guys out there after that. It goes 9:30-12:30 but probably won't stay for the whole thing.
