I frequently run Assateague as we have a second home about 10 miles away. I'll be down there this weekend, but doubt if I will be back over the holiday. However, I am up for a future run. The Spring and Fall are best -- fewest bugs and crowds.
Here is a post that I did over at PlanetIsuzoo that has a lot of info including some links to the park. If you go, be sure to take the side trails. As for the wheeling, I'd rate it as Green 1. It is a lot less interesting than OBX.
The Assateague Crab House on RT611 is one of the least expensive seafood places in the area. They usually have a discount coupon in the free papers that you can pick up at the Info Center and most gas stations.
Speaking of gas stations, before hitting the beach, I usually gas up at the Exxon on Rt 50 in West OC, just before the OC draw bridge. It is also a Wine Rack. I have found some decent wine in the 3 for $16 bin.
The Green Turtle on RT 611 is a good sports bar. I like their hot wings and mini-burgers.
There is a nature center on RT 611 just before the bridge to Assateague.
Have fun and be sure to bring a camera.

I wheel an 89 Isuzu Trooper, but at least my wife drives a Sienna.

Might be able to run down one of the days. It's $70 for a year pass plus $20 yearly park entrance fee. Minimum park required equipment is shovel, hi-lift jack, 12x12 board, tire gauge (possibly tow strap don't remember). I was able to get in the first time w/o paying park entrance fee by asking to go get the off road permit. You need to go to the national side.
Guys,
Have agreat time - wish I could go, I used to surf fish there all the time when I lived there in OC.....just be sure to really clean the undersides good when you leave - salt water is like acid, and it finds its way into everything...
