Driving on the DC beltway, Opus's window got hit and now I got to replace the windshield!! GRRRRRRRRR!!!!
I've read the horror stories on the board of installers who had no idea how to remove and reattach the trim above the headliner, so I was wondering if anyone has used someone who knew what they were doing with a FJ.
I'm in the DC area (MD/VA/DC); so although I'm from Philly, I can't go that far for a replacement.
Most glass shops now know how to install a new windshield.
On the trim you do not reuse it!
That part is $279 or so, and you will need a new one.
The shop I went to had the new glass and trim ordered for me from my dealer, then when then got the parts in they called me to come in.
The shop even tried to take off the trim to see if they would not dent it, not so.
They have done many, they get dented pulling them off since they glued down.
Here is a $$$ breakdown of my job, but it only cost me $50 on account of my policy.
1053.00 One windshield
133.00 Labor
15.00 Fast cure, primer
278.19 Dealer molding (the trim piece)
130.17 Sales tax
_______________
Total
$1609.36
- 50.00 my deductible
$1559.36

How bad is the crack? I just got hit on Thursday and it is between 2nd & 3rd wipers it went up 5 inches, made a u-turn back down. Since I don't have to worry about inspection until next March, I am not replacing it anytime soon.. I hope.

Thanks for the great info!
Just so I follow you, I was thinking that the trim was the white part in front of the roof. Is that what it's called?

Off center, driver side from the top, about 6" down on a curve.

Yep, that is the piece.
What a ripoff on the almost $300.
Toyota knows most end users will not be replacing this part themselves, so the price is high so the insurance companies get stuck with the huge markup on it.
It is just a piece of flimsy plastic with plastic clips underneath, and it goes back on with them and more gobbly mounds of sealant/glue type of stuff.
He showed the piece to me, incredible they get so much money for it.

I just spoke to Fitzgerald and they rec'd Banner glass (in Rockville, MD); he told me they just did one for them this week.
Anyone heard good things about Banner Glass?
I have used banner several times on other vehicles and had no issues whatsoever.
You gotta wonder if the cost to replace the windshield is so expensive if that won't trickle down into higher insurance costs down the road as the data is collected and analysed...
