As for the the Pine Barrens, I have been to Wharton State Park twice and each time we had to recover a rig. The mud there is very deep and goo. Neither time did I see the Jersey Devil.
If you look in the Trail Report section of this site you will find lots of pics of all of these places.

Awesome info, thanks guys! Yeah nj is tough if you don't know any land owners. I may have to check out south jersey... where the jersey devil is.
And believe it or not, I'm actually going to be 5 min from assateague island this weekend. I had no idea there were trails. I'll have to watch out for wild horses.

You can only go on the state road for free. Usually this is enough to let you see some ponies and deer.
It costs $20 to get an pass for the year to the National Park (there is also a day rate but I just get the annual pass). Once in the National Park you have access to several hiking trails.
To go off road, there is yet another $70 fee for the annual OSV pass. This lets you drive on 12 miles of beach. Make sure that you bring the required equipment (e.g., a shovel, a recovery strap and a board to put under your jack).
If you do get out on the sand, be sure to take some of the side trails that run from the beach to the bayside. Some are marked on the map and have names. But the last time that I was out there out there, two of the nicer trails were only marked by tall posts:
Tall Marker 234 -- Nice place to view the bay side.
Tall Marker 253 -- Long mud hole
The Green Turtle sports bar on Rt611 is a nice place to stop for a bite to eat and a beer after leaving the park. The sliders (mini cheeseburgers) are one of my favorites. Also do not forget to give your rig a good wash down. There is a lot of salt in the air and on the sand. There is a self service car wash at the Jiffy Lube in the West OC shopping center (about 1/4 mile east of the intersection of Rt50 and Rt611).
Have fun.

What up, I go wheeling alot up on Stag Hill in Mahwah. Just take the Sheridan crossroads exit on 17 and cross over, and head up the hill, you will see the pipeline on your left, just turn off and head up, there's trails on both sides. Now, I know what you are thinking !!! Them crazy locals live up there. You're right they do, but, they don't bother anybody. I've been going up there for years, and I just started going back up there after that one dude got shot and killed by the Rangers. As long as you stay away from the houses you'll be fine. Lastly, the only other place I go in Jersey is on George's property down in the Pine Barrens. This guys owns a ton of property right of the Parkway. If you ever heard of someone telling stories about 3 HOLE or Engine block, well that's George's property. Big party on Memorial day weekend.
Hey Trooper, thanks for all the info! I actually took the right turn at marker 234 and had lunch out there... it was awesome and just the getaway I needed. Needless to say I bought the pass but it will be worth it when I go back in the summer. I have family who are involved with the island so I have free day passes. I will have to try the bar for lunch... I never make it past Watermans
And in another odd coincidence... I actually live in Mahwah, NorthJerseyFJ. Not two minutes from Stag Hill. I knew there's a bunch of three wheelin going on back there. Last thing I need is trouble with the local po-po But I may have to check it out.
