Thumbs up Oregon Back Country Discovery Route

While searching for other runs, I came across this:

Back Country Maps

This seems like a different kind of off roading. Rather than trying to hit hard obstacles and go only 30 miles in a day, this is more back country touring on old logging roads where you can do 100. More about seeing Oregon. From the pictures, it looks like any stock FJ could do this. Might be a nice group run. Any takers for next September?

This is more my area of interest. I could be up for coming down.

Rock crawling looks cool, but I enjoy exploring more.

Re: Oregon Back Country Discovery Route

As long as I can fit it into my school schedule Im in. I planned to do this with my BMW 1200 GS awhile back and never got around to doing it. This looks like a nice (easy) trail to get some good camping with some good folks and get a little dirty while were at it. There are some opportunities along the way for more serious sidetrips as well.

Re: Oregon Back Country Discovery Route

As for timing, spring could be okay for some sections, But I think Trail 3 is a late summer deal...

That looks like a heck of a run. Reminds me of this article in National Geographic Adventure . . .

excerpt: National Geographic Adventure Mag.: Canada-to-Mexico Dirt Road Trip

How many days do you figure that would take ?

Thumbs up Re: Oregon Back Country Discovery Route

I know a few people on OBH (Oregon Bush Hackers, another off roading group) that has run a couple of these trails. I have been pestering a friend to give me a peek at the maps. The traveling is slow, but the views are rumored to be gorgeous.

I have been wanting to go on route 4 all summer, but my schedule hasn't accommodating. Route 4 appears to follow along the Cascade range. I am more of a mountain man that a desert rat. I would be interesting in join anyone on a road trip, or part of a road trip.

Since these are mostly just old logging roads, you think it is trailer safe? I have taken the tent trailer on some old forest servers roads with out a problem.

Re: Oregon Back Country Discovery Route

Barlow Trail this weekend, preferably Saturday?

I've never driven it, and am unqualified to lead, but other trail reports show stock 4X4's making it. Still looking for a good map online. I think the usual start is either Maupin or Dufur West to Hwy. 35 or Government Camp.

Sounds fun, but this weekend is booked. Gotta get some "pumpkin patch" time in with the lady

I have no clue... Hopefully we can find someone who's run them. I Even if it were, I might be inclined to tent...

Re: Oregon Back Country Discovery Route

I will tent, I have an inflatable tent that is excellent for quick and easy setup. With a power tank or similar its easy to setup and take down.

AirZone Recreation - Products

I also have several MossUSA mountaineering tents (2 and 4 person) but those I use when I have a base camp for hiking / climbing.

Anyways, I am looking forward to this - I love Oregon and would love to see more of it.
