Oregon Relocation

Hi all! My FJ, fiance, and I (not necessarily in that order) are looking at relocating to Oregon from Chicagoland....possibly the Portland area...and figured that this might be a good place to get information. Can anyone give me some pluses/minuses on the area? 4-wheeling info, weather, scenery, jobs, etc. Any info would help!!!

Start with this thread:

Thinking of moving to oregon...

Jessa was talking about more rural locations, but it still has some good stuff in there....

Re: Oregon Relocation

My advise is.. I moved here 4 years ago from Seattle. I would come down a spend a couple of days checking out the City. The nice thing about Portland is that if you live in the burbs like Beaverton, Raligh Hills, Hillsboro ect you are about 20min from Portland at most. It all depends were you are living and working and what you like. I could not live DT, I live in Beaverton and it's nice to have options, I am about 45 min from Browns Camp which is a local ORV area.

Re: Oregon Relocation

So many nice things about Portland. Nice to be able to be in high desert in the morning, skiing Mt Hood in the late morning, and then eating fish and chips on the beach by dinner.
I know of no other place with such variety and spirit. A nice part of the world...

Re: Oregon Relocation

When you do move out (and you will move out), look me up. The wife and I both moved out here from Chi town (but at separate times). Would not give it up for the world.

Re: Oregon Relocation

Lived there for 16 years and miss it! You may want to consider the Washington side of the Columbia River. Washington has no state income tax and you can hop over the I5 or I205 bridge into Oregon and shop with no sales tax. The NW is a great area and if you learn to deal with the rain, you will love it. Good luck!!

Note: I should add that if you work in Oregon and live in Washington, you have to pay OR income tax, so find a job in Vancouver!

Re: Oregon Relocation

Thank you VERY much for all the information and advice. I've already contacted a realtor (today, actually) in the area and we our getting our resume's ready to send out by January 1st. It seems that the consensus here (from your responses), and from what I've heard elsewhere, is that it's a fantastic place to live. Time for some life changin'!

I'll plan on looking up everyone I can once I move (and YES...I will move...hahaha!) to do some wheelin'!

Thanks again!!!

Re: Oregon Relocation

Definitely consider Vancouver. Houses are cheaper. Schools are MUCH nicer (if you have kids). We have lived in Vancouver for 14 years. Love it! ANd the area screams scenery and 4x4 fun!!! The forest roads are awesome!!!

Re: Oregon Relocation

Insider tip: Vancouver refers to Canada. "The 'Couve" refers to Washington.
