Hey,
I was born and raised in the great State o Maine.Getting out was the best thing for me.9 years in Hawaii as a scuba insructor changed my whole perspective on the world.I now live in Bend Or.which I consider to be one of the best places in the world to live.Check it out.
Wow, from Maine to Hawaii, talk about shell shock I like to hear instances when someone has moved out of Maine and how they liked where they went. I'll have to check out Bend then. Thanks!

by the way DooDooBloo, where in Maine were your born and raised?

Re: Looking for a little advice for relocation...

There are some fields you can follow in grad school that won't cost you a dime. I've avoided my telling story on this forum, but I think you would benefit from my experience, because I was like you when I first graduated....althouth my degree was in business administration. Here goes....I finished my degree, had a very hard time finding a job with no experrience....took a job I eventually learned to hate, stayed in the industry for 15 years. About 10 years into that hated way of life I started back to school part time....loved what I studied. I love the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and 4-wheelin.. I found a field of study that allows me to do/be close to these things on a daily basis. I'm now starting the last year of my PhD work...I've been on full scholarship since day 1 in grad school, it is very possible if you pick the right field...consider geophysics of geology for example...they are begging for students these days. Your UG degree would be good prep for these fields. Anyway, as others say life is short, don't punish yourself by going to a job you hate. No matter what you decide, it is NEVER too late to start over.

Biddeford. My whole family still lives in Southern Maine.I am the only one who ever left. They are all pretty stuck in their ways and opinions.Sad but we have so little in common now. They cannot understand my views on things. They only see things one way.The Maine way.
I love Maine but I have no plans to ever return to live.I will say that I miss the ocean very much.I grew up right at the mouth of the Saco river and then taught diving on Maui for years. My life was all about the ocean and I miss it.

Geophysics of geology. Well i did take a few geology related electives during my time at UMO and they were more interesting then a lot of my classes. I'll look into that. Thank you very much for your input Joe, I really do appreciate all the feedback. This is definitely helping me realize what is more important to me right now, and that is just doing what I want to do, rather than what one may expect me to do.

Yeah, mainers do have a certain way of thinking, there's not doubt about that. I definitely think I need to be around different types of people for a little while, to get a good feel for what it's like outside of maine.

I bet the ocean water down in Maui was a million times more comfortable to dive in then it is up here. I don't know if you ever dove for scallops, but my previous boss whom I worked for during the summers and this past fall goes out diving for scallops from now until march. You could not PAY me enough to go and do that. That's gotta be cold!!!

I started out diving for scallops then moved on to urchins.Very cold and dangerous work.Maui was much more agreeable.

Whatever you do, don't move to Austin, Texas - we've got way too many troubled Northerners here already....

So here's the scoop:
I just graduated
I just purchased an FJ cruiser, as you may have read in my introduction post.
I should be ecstatic, but low and behold I have no idea where I'm going to relocate too.
Have you checked out Raleigh, NC. It's located between the outer banks and the Western Carolina mountains. That area of the state is booming $$$ with places like Cary, NC sprawling out for retirees. You probably could find a job in your field there, wheel on the beach in Summer and do some snow trips in the Winter to the mountains.

Anyway congrats on the graduation and good luck!

Re: Looking for a little advice for relocation...

As a former civil engineer, I can say that you can pretty much get a job in any state you want to live, so just pick someplace that you like and go.

My biggest regret upon graduating undergrad was not listening to my roommates dad, who travelled the world for his job and had a great life - he told all of us (there were 4 of us that rommed throughout college) to not rush into our career, but rather take a year or two on a job that takes you places. Examples are cruise ships, club med's, etc. When you come straight out of college, you are just so anxious to earn a buck, that you don't realize that that is the best time to work for nothing at a fun job, because you are already used to having nothing.

My $.02
