Geophysics may be heating up now with the oilshale thing starting up again in CO see thursday NY Times. That might be a way to do engineering and not be in a cubicle. Might be a good way to get out and stretch your legs prior to an advanced degree at, say, University of Colorado.
The Mountain West is a beautiful place really IMO the most spectacular part of the lower 48. I lived there (UT) for a while after engineering school and drove my FJ thousands of miles all over. Plan was to stop there for a year or 2 on my way to silicon valley but I stayed 12. I had a wilderness area in my backyard with an 11,000 foot peak 3 miles from my driveway.
The Northwest is also great.
