Re: Any pointer for a newbie?

Hillsborito, heh.

Congrats on your new rig and welcome here.

I'd consider a set of TRD wheels. They have a very tough finish, look good and are open to a wider choice of tires. Vendors here sell them for ~$125 ea. + shipping.

Then I'd mount a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers 285's, do a little trimming and call it good for now. The Nittos transform the FJ both on (especially in rain and snow) and off road, and will give you a small lift over stock height. The 285's are also available in LT construction, supposedly stiffer and more durable. I got mine at America's Tire Co. where they gave me a $200 credit for the hopeless OEM shoes.

Have fun!

Re: Any pointer for a newbie?

TRD wheels is one of my options and I'll take a look at those Nitto Terra Grapplers 285's. My only concern is the "trimming" that needs to be done. I'd hate to do anything to will void some, if not any warranty on the rig...

If I add a 3" OME suspension lift, a TRD wheel with Nitto Terra Grapplers 285's, do you think I still need them trimming done?

Re: Any pointer for a newbie?

From what I've learned around here and YotaTech, a 2" lift would be more than enough for 285's with no trimming. The trimming looks to be minor and wouldn't affect warranty if you want to stay stock height.

Re: Any pointer for a newbie?

Okay, hopefully I won't change my mind so much, but so far what I'm going to get are:

1. TRD wheels
2. I'm unsure what tires to get, however, I don't want specific mud tires, or dune tires, but rather all around kind of tires...maybe a Bridgestone'ish?
3. TRD muffler
4. K&N intake
5. TBD
6. TBD
7. CB Radio
8. Wet Okole Seat Covers
9. Recovery Shackle
10. Yakima/Thule rack

Then take it on a few trial runs and see if I really need a lift or not...

Re: Any pointer for a newbie?

Not familar with K&N's set up, but the TRD intake is killer.
Please feel free to come to one of our meeetings,
Casacde Cruisers, every 3rd Thurs. @ Busters BBQ in Tigard, 7pm. You can see my rig there, along with a wide variety of Toys going back 40+ years.

Cool, I should make it next week! Hopefully I'll have my rig back in time. Any chance to see your rig before than?

Re: Any pointer for a newbie?

I'd go with new shoes first. Then take it on a trail. you'll be impresed at how well the FJ wheels right out of the box. I've taken alot of newbs to Browns Camp and all of them ended the day with big smiles and more respect for there rigs. And then thats when the mod bug hits them. I will gladly take you out there. I ran 285 70/R17 BFG's before I was lifted with no rubbing at all. Rock rails are also a must. Mine have saved my FJ from body damage a number of times. They also work well as door stops in parking lots. If you have any specific questians please PM me. I'vw done all my own work on my FJ and I'm willing to help out anyone. This is what it looks like for now.

Thanks for the invitation bernd and I'll take you up on it as soon I get my rig back from the shop. I am getting new shoes and a few more things. I really like your current setup, nice and simple.

I've heard of this brown camp but didn't want to go out there by myself unless someone hold my hand (figuratively speaking LOL). I'll PM ya here in a bit!
