Okay, time to clue in the newb:

What is GMRS?

-G
GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) is the next set of frequencies "above" FRS (Family Radio Service). GMRS requires a license from the FCC similar to an "Amature" or "Ham" radio operators license where FRS and CB do not.

In Motorola convention, FRS are channels 1 (462.5625 MHz) through 14 (467.7125 MHz), GMRS are channels 15 (462.550 MHz) through 22 (462.725 MHz).

Broadcasting on GMRS channels requires a license from the FCC because the GMRS frequencies can be broadcast at a significantly higher wattage then FRS. No test required like a Ham license but you have to pay a $75 registration fee.

KD7NAC (my Amature Radio call sign)
WPWS334 (my GMRS call sign)

Not that many people broadcasting on GMRS now have a license, but technically it is illegal and carries fines or jail time.

I do have a license (WPYB354), but 99% of the people using these things do not. I promise we will not tell anyone... We prefer CB anyway...Better reception.

Cool - one of the few people I've met that has a GMRS license. The FCC has been talking about removing the license requirement but that will probably take another 5 years.

See you at Greenwater

Yeah. Looking forward to seeing you. They need to remove the requirement. It's as flippant as the old CB licenses used to be. All it equates to is a tax anyway. And yes, when I was a CB'er before the mid-1970's explosion I was licensed too. But, was also using a Yaesu 101-E. Loved that radio...
