Hmmmm...you make a compelling argument. Let me know the next time you're heading out...I may just tag along. I have Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's on my rig...alright for the sand?
Sounds good. I almost got MT/R's but my tire dealer couldn't guarantee no rubbing with 285's on stock rims. From what I've read around the web, they're considered the reference off-road all-conditions tire at the expense of on-road wet grip. I think Sand Lake would become a sand box for you!

Well, I'll see how well the stock Dunlops do this weekend... Hopefully Clerk will come so he can pull my butt out!

I think you'll do fine if you air down to 18-20 or less. Some others there, including the park ranger, suggested 12-15, but I was concerned about a tire peeling off so stayed with 20.

I've seen the OEM Bridgestones and Dunlops. The Dunlops look much more like an A/T tire than the Bridgestones. In fact, they don't look much different than the Nittos I'm running, a mild tread pattern A/T.

I think you'll be amazed at just how competent your FJ is. At first I was tentative and stuck to the beach area. Then I sat off to one side watching the quads and rails hillclimb, and a few trucks getting stuck, toward the North end of the beach. I went for it, started in 2nd, shifted to 3rd before the bottom and flew up the hill churning the whole way. That was the confidence builder that eventually had me run the whole park.

Keep up your speed everywhere and you'll be fine. When descending any steeps, you may sidestep one way or another, typical of a locked rear. Simply gently (but counter intuitively) accelerate to bring the truck back into a vertical descent. You don't want to traverse a steep dune, but DO want to rail the bowls, powersliding across the face and throwing roostertails everywhere. Have fun and take lots of pics!

I'm looking forward to trying something completely foreign to me!

Did you use ATRAC at all? (if you have ATRAC) Curious how it compared to the locker...guess I'll find out, huh?

Thanks for the reminder. DO NOT use A-TRAC. It will bring you to a complete stop as it senses wheelspin and eventually clamp down on all four wheels. Sand is one place where you want wheelspin on demand. The locker is tremendously helpful, I used it all the time.

Yeah, I remember reading about that. I had forgotten. Oops.

Re: Where are some good off road trails in OR?

Has anyone heard of the Widowmaker? It is off Skyline - up off Burnside -I think - just outside of Portland - maybe a 10 min drive. Back in the 80s I had a '59 jeep that could climb that puppy where everyone else's fancy rigs could not - I can't remember where it is ... I would love to go back with an FJ. I dunno though - it is really vertical, or at least in my 20s it seemed that way. My two buddies bailed out half way up from terror! lol I am basically a crazy SOB I guess, always have been.

Re: Where are some good off road trails in OR?

Oh yeah - Sand - I used to go to a beach off Marine Drive - can't remember that one either (Senile) ... my poor Jeep ... I used to wrecklessly fly up and over those sand dunes with Sammy Hagar full blast .. aww .. the sweet memories. My friend hit his head on the rollbar so hard the sound made my ears ring ... he was unconscious for a while ... pansy.

Oh yeah ... it was Ditler's beach ... maybe some Portland folks remember that was a major party place for 4x4s.
