Yeah the one with the green hills that have black dots/streaks on them is pretty wild. What is in the soil to cause that sort of coloring?

Re: Central Oregon

Welcome to Central Oregon!! That is the beauty we have all around us here. I believe he took the red pictures at the Painted Hill? The rest of them are out at the area by radio tower we have been talking about. Correct me if I am wrong but that is what it looks like to me.

Re: Central Oregon

You are correct the red and green with black dots are taken at the painted hills just after a rain storm. The painted hills are ash deposits so you see the colors of the minerals coming out. More info here. John Day Fossil Beds National Monument - Painted Hills Unit (U.S. National Park Service)

I have been up and down those trails at the radio tower. Some fun goofing around. Used to drive the road that goes from there to todd lake, but i heard they closed it. I would like to see whats farther up the main road sometime. Last time i was up there was last winter in my buddies H1 plowing through snow drifts. gotta love it. The link below has a couple of pics of what the view looks like from skyliner for the out of towners. Also a couple of pics of the painted hills. Found a dirt road from prineville through the Ochoco range. The snow pic is the bridge across Tumalo creek just before christmas.

Great pictures.. Where were these taken again? Because that has to be on the place I go this year!

Never mind.... I guess I should have finished reading the whole thread....

Re: Central Oregon

Hey I just caught this thread--I know I'm a little late--but I'm dying to check out Central Oregon wheeling (I'm new to Oregon in general)...I'd definitely be up for a trip anytime. I've got a buddy with a non-FJ *gasp* (it's ok-it's a 4runner ) that's down in that area that would be up for a weeekend run too.

Re: Central Oregon

Finally... I was wondering if there where any other Central Oregon guys who were looking for some other FJers to go wheel with. After all this is the FJ capital of the world (or at least it seems). I was looking out doing a short run this weekend, I need to go check out some camp sites down by Wickiup, and figured i would go play around down there. Anyone up for a half day trip?

-Matt

Re: Central Oregon

If you put these coordinates into a browser, you'll see the radio tower and all the fire roads and trails.

44° 02' 49" N, 121° 31' 55" W

I used to work there, and have been up on Jack Pine Ridge a ZILLION times.
