Oregon is a beautiful place to visit, know several people that moved there to get away, get in the greenery and out of Southern California, most moved back to So Cal in a couple of years though, rain can become very depressing.
I personally think its a sportsman's paradise but most people there now aint to keen to strangers ruining their secrete.
Jessa,
It's supposed to be record setting hi temps today. Which is rare here this early in the year.
I moved here about 4.5 years ago. I live between Eugene & Corvallis, both of which are college towns and are more northern, as rickreno said, the south part of the state from Rosburg down is usually 10 degrees more severe, than here in the Alsea Valley. He's right, that it rains more as you move north. What they dont tell you is that all the green you see from an airplane is MOSS.
Un-employment last year was the highest of the 50 states, but is getting better this year. No Sales tax is cool on big purchases, like an FJ, but they say property taxes are to make up for it. I've lived in Calif & Colorado, and dont see the Prop taxes much different. Gas is as expensive as So. Calif.
Housing is affordable, at least as far as I've seen. I dont know the portland area. Wages, from what I've seen are low compared to Calif.
I'm on the west side of the Cascades (Mountain range that runs north & south) and about 35 miles from the beautiful Oregon Coast, and for the most part love it here. I just checked you profile and at your age, have you looked at all at Colorado, near Colorado Springs?
I'm fortunate to have my own CAD Drafting Business, so employment and or kids going to school are not a problem I have to worry about.
Hope this helps, if you need any more info email me. Dont go thru my website, as I havent updated it in 5 years.
Well goodness!
Thankyou so much for your post, We were thinking about colorado as its closer, but with rescued pitbulls we have to be careful where we move because of breed specific legislation which does not allow pitbulls in certain counties. The dogs are our number one concern, then weather, then safety(like no tornadoes or earthquakes or stuff that will kill us!). We are renting here still, and our rent just got raised for the second time this year so we are renting now for 900 when we could easily have a house payment...so because of that and the heat here in Az its just not worth the sorrow of life here! If I do need anything I will make sure to contact you!!

I lived in SW Portland for a year. In that time, I learned to snowboard on Hood (and then went all the time to Skibowl), kayaked down near Pacific City with the seals, hiked and mtn biked Hood in the summertime, mtn biked in between the coast and Portland (MUD MUD MUD). I also recall a lot of 4x4 trails in that area but I had a Passat at the time so it wasn't too much interest to me The Pearl District has evolved into a pretty amazing neighborhood from when I was there....and you won't find much better mtn biking than riding along the Deschutes River down near Bend. There are caves to explore, giant fish to see out in the locks on the Columbia, and amazing waterfalls. I miss it out there......definitely. My family and friends are here though, so it becomes a major tossup. Anyway...if you like the outdoors........you'd like Oregon.
I love the outside, I love gree, I love rain, I have yet to live with snow but its not 120!! You all are supposed to give me negatives but I cant seem to find a reason to "hate" oregon....

Well. I live in the Portland area, and love the NorthWest. I travelled all over the US. In fact I am in Florida this week. But IMHO there is not place as nice as the Northwest. There are a few places to Wheel up the Columbia Gorge, Mt Hood, Tillimonk State Forest, and Sand Lake. Althrough I spectect that there isn't as many trails as in AZ.
My goal is to take my FJ to Colorado. There is some good wheeling! I don't think there is any other state you can take your FJ over 14,000 ft.? I spend most of my summers growing up sleeping in a tent in colorado. It would be my second choice. It has more mountians, and more trails. But you miss out on the ocean and the greenery.
Good luck on you decision. Look us up if you come to Oregon. We can go wheeling
I woud love to look you all up when and if we do go up there, you can show us all the cool places to go wheeling or playing and no matter what my FJ will get DIRTY and not just dusty!! Tee hee hee!!
You know as an arizona native ive seen maybe 4 scorpions my whole life...the weather alone will be worth a move...

I love rain so I dont think it will be a problem, plus it makes mud so I can cover the FJ with it!!

Thankyou everyone that has posted so far....I cant wait to fully make this decision....
I haven't been that far South. I was in Florence Sunday, but for surfing, not FJ-ing... I assume you saw the video and pictures from our trip to Sand Lake? Video and Pictures from Sand Lake run

Lessee.... Oregon made the list of highest tax states in the Union. I believe they came in at #5. I think the "way its done" is to live in Washington State (no income tax) and shop in Oregon (no sales tax). Could be vice-versa.
Its also very close to the Cascade fault zone which is showing recent signs of waking up after a very long rest...
Washington sells more sunglasses per capita than any other state in the Union. There are so few sunny days, people put them down, actually loosing the glasses by the next time the Sun comes out.
I know that sounds linke bravo-sierria but it was passed to me by a resident.
I did see the pics and video for the sand lake, was awesome and whats sand by the way!! Just have cactus and heat with no rain...just a dust storm once every few months....
OK overnight if anything else has to add please do....pictures, more videos...sheesh bad or good news! Ill look at any pics that show different cities or a green peice of earth thats called MOSS! LMAO I just want to know what your heaven is like....even if the taxes are high if you own a home.... Its just like gas, its exspensive, but you need it so Im going out and buying an SUV so I can drive everywhere, even with these sky rocketing prices!!
Night everyone, and thank you again!!

Oregon has high taxes because it's so socialist! A lot of people live on the Washington side (Vancouver) and either work in the "Beaver" state or just buy stuff in Oregon. Mt. St. Helens is already gone, so unless your near Mt. Rainier I wouldn't worry about volcanos...
Washington buys sunglasses...that's just the eastside of the state...It's sunnier than Arizona, but don't tell anyone we don't want them here.
