I've always wondered about moving up to Oregon. Bostonian, you mentioned Bend as a place with more temperate weather...Why is that the case? And how much better is the weather there? Whats the city like?

Bend sits at about 3600 feet elevation on the east side of the cascades right where the high desert meets the mountains. Winter is fairly harsh with plenty of snow but summer there is hard to beat. Great golf courses everywhere with some of the best skiing anywhere, Mt. Bachelor.http://www.nwtr.org/2005/aboutbend.html

Ya, Tom McCall, a governor in the 70's coined that phrase, "Oregon, a nice place to visit, but don't plan to stay". We've always liked the "small" town feel here, but that has long since passed. Portland is now clogged with traffic and all the other problems of a big city.

There arent too many cool places around anymore that the masses havent found, San Diego is the same way, it used to be nice here, trust me you cant stop it, if you live in a nice area where everyone likes to "keep a small town feel" thats exactly what everyone else is searching for so you might as well make the best of it

Love Bend, but it is getting a bit crowded... Bachelor can be great (had one of the best powder days of my life there this year), but I have been rained on there a few times as well...

I'm looking to Oakridge as the "new Bend"...

One thing Portland has done is crate what they call the Urban Growth Boundary. Everything outside of this line has to be sold in minimum of 5 acre chunks. This really has helped slow the 'sprawl' that inflicts so many other cities. From downtown, it doesn't take very long to be in farmland...

Oregon has high taxes because it's so socialist! A lot of people live on the Washington side (Vancouver) and either work in the "Beaver" state or just buy stuff in Oregon. Mt. St. Helens is already gone, so unless your near Mt. Rainier I wouldn't worry about volcanos...
Washington buys sunglasses...that's just the eastside of the state...It's sunnier than Arizona, but don't tell anyone we don't want them here.
You may be sunny, but the Willamette Valley stole all of your dirt. Sorry

Re: Thinking of moving to oregon...

It was about 104 here in Lake Oswego today. Hot Hot Hot when you are not used to it.

3-4 years ago I played tennis with a friend for two hours when it was 104. We had to keep pouring water over our tennis shoes, they were on fire! I love hot weather, but need a few days to adapt.
