We don't need no stinkin' badges and the boss is super cool. Wait, the boss is me. No problem.
Haha! Yeah if no one is up to an fjgpsgtg, then I don't mind showing you the in-n-outs of your unit and the software. I take mine with me when I go out of town and upload the maps for that area, and some, for getting around. If you ever wondered if you can take a gps unit aboard an airplane, the answer is yes. I called the TSA on taking mine on a trip once as it wasn't listed in the approved/ non-approved items list. The reason I inquired, I know the possibilities of certain items that xmit/rcv signals.
Re: NWFJCC May's Run?, Olallie Lake National Scenic Area & Geocaching
Sounds like a great idea and a great location. I would suggest that once we get a feel for loading and playing with the GPS, we go out and get our feet wet with a Geocache.

We should do a downtown geocashe/bar crawl on foot from my office after the training. Do a shot at every bar, collect a matchbook or stapm (or NWFJCC sticker) or something.

Yeah that sounds like it would be a blast!

You can take it with you, but you aren't supposed to fire it up while onboard since it sends/receives a signal.
Yeah, but there are other reasons as to why electronics that xmit/rx should be off during flight. I had to learn radar, electronic warfare and worked on the waveform generators (radar jammers) and the transmitters for the ea-6b prowlers (a-6 intruders).

I will be there in May. But what the heck is Geocache? I have a TomTom GPS unit. Does this work or does it have to be a handheld device? I have done some wheeling in Tahuya State Forest ORV Guide but I am new to the game so I will be looking for help from you experienced folk.

I wouldn't sweat the geocache thing, I also have the tomtom and unless you download (and pay for the "topo" stuff) there isn't anything you're missing. The GPS is a great thing, but lookin' out the window and runnin' by the seat of your pants is always much more fun.
What is geocoaching; "Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache"
When you run with NWFJCC you are never underequipped, nor will you ever be made to feel that way. That is not the premise of these runs.......... we all have different equipment, we all respect others choices in that equipment, we all want to have fun, share the experience, help those who need it, and most of all be safe, and leave the premises cleaner than we found it. Nothing too serious here, family oriented, friendly, and clean fun-seeking.
Re: NWFJCC May's Run?, Olallie Lake National Scenic Area & Geocaching
The GPS is used to get you in a 20-50 foot radius of where the Geocache is hidden. Then it is just a matter of using your eyes and brain to find the hidden treasure. I think we will have enough handhelds to gets in the general area, and then everyone can join in on the search.
