Bill Burke is coming to town

Bill will be in the PNW between 9/22-10/14, using Portland as a base camp. To get club-based training on the schedule will require a 50% deposit. (The same would be true, though on an individual basis, for reserving a spot in an advertised class, none of which have been posted yet.) Deposits would be payable directly to BB4WA (Bill Burke's 4-Wheeling America).

If you don't know Bill's work, have a spin around the 4-Wheeling America website. There's a useful collection of articles as well as experiential trip and training schedules. There's also a nice little video about Bill's training classes:

Bill Burke's 4-Wheeling America

I propose the following dates:
  • NWFJCC On the Road (OTR): Sat-Sun 10/3-10/4 or Sat-Sun 10/10-10/11
  • NWFJCC Hands-on Recovery: Mon 10/5 or Mon 10/12

The Recovery class would ideally be paired with the OTR to allow attending both on consecutive days.

I want to work around Cascade Cruiser's annual Cruisin' the Woods, which is scheduled for 9/26 (TLCA has this wrongly as 9/29), and the proposed dates tentatively scheduled by another club.

With Bill in Portland, the likely location would be Browns Camp in Tillamook State Forest.

Here's what's needed:
  • OTR: 8 vehicles @ $465/vehicle
  • Recovery: 6 vehicles @ $250/vehicle

You should be prepared to pay a 50% deposit as soon as we have a full roster.

Remember: Prices cover up to two adults per vehicle, so with an adult co-pilot, your share is reduced by half.

We still have some spots open, so please post up ASAP!

I've taken both of those classes from Bill, and guarantee that you will enjoy them and that everyone will learn something, no matter what your experience level. The classes I was in were half-full of other 4WD trainers and expedition company owners. Highly recommended!

Re: Bill Burke is coming to town

Indeed! While these do include some "lecture" time, the classes invariably are heavily oriented toward practical, hands-on applications and involve far more seat time on trails each day than you'd generally get on a "normal" trail run -- maybe a few run's worth. It's not just that Bill knows his stuff and has the experience and credentials to back it up, where he really stands out (IMO) is his effectiveness in presenting material to folk of very different skill and experience levels, his sometimes uncanny ability to relate to very different personalities and his willingness and skill in making on-the-fly adjustments to specific class needs. As a bonus, Bill very actively maintains an ongoing consulting relationship with folk who've attended his classes. I know, because I've taken advantage of this on several occasions. This is crazy awesome, but is just one sign of a person who has dedicated himself to helping others become better, more responsible and more eco-friendly wheelers.

I've taken his classes, organized Off Road Survival Camp with him, and done recon for trail runs for him. If you think you know how to drive off-road than spend a day with Bill. You'll be surprised what you don’t know and learn better ways to drive in the backcountry! Guaranteed!

Yep. The money and time spent with Bill is very well spent and far more useful practically -- even for the occasional wheeler -- than most any mod (IMO).

BTW, the Off Road Survival Camp schedule looks really terrific. I hope it's a huge success!

Best wishes Relic'!

This would be sweet to attend, but we are already commited to the FJ Summit in Ouray, and a trip to McGrew Run in Sept.

Re: Bill Burke is coming to town

The bad news: Bill's time has been all booked up for his biennial visit to the Pacific Northwest, so I won't be pursuing this further.

The good news: We booked some some of his time. See Trail leader training with Bill Burke.

One spot left for trail leader training this October 9-11 out of Browns Camp in Tillamook State Forest. This will be a fantastic time covering advanced recovery, spotting, run planning, group dynamics and more!

PM me if you're interested.
