I have a Nikon D70s. Initially bought it to take pics at the Indianapolis moto gp. Got some great pics of one of the riders that slid right into my direction. BUT, honestly I have no clue how to really use this camera.
I had a guy offer to buy my used D2x and I told him for the money the D7000 is sooooo much better.
I assume the D800 is going to put the D3's out to pasture. Not sure about the D4 though
D4 and the D800 have many similarities. D4 has the upper hand in ultimate ISO flexibility with it able to go up to ISO 204,800 while the D800 caps out at 25,600. The external mic function is really cool though. I think more and more the camcorders will be phased out in favor of all-in-ones. "Dual Live View" is pretty cool as it allows you to maintain manual exposure while you switch between still and videos.

I have the 5D MarkII and LOVE it. I also figured out early on that the EF-S lens offerings from Canon are junk(I know the 5D can't shoot with them because of the full frame, but I started with their 20D).
I now only carry "L" series lenses, and haven't look back. My 24-70 on the full frame looks great, and it is a 2.5 so it is fast too. And my 70-200 2.5L with stabilizer is a joy to shoot.
Color and clarity out of the combination is amazing, and I only have myself to blame now for a bad shot.
Good luck. Best advise I can offer is to play with both-rent one for the weekend if u can - and see which one fits you best. ...... Then spend the money on the best you can afford and the biggest sensor you can afford. It's an unbeatable combo when you only limitation is what the idiot behind the shutter can imagine.
I shoot a lot of automotive (stills) and nature (waterfalls, landscapes, etc..). I would love to start shooting some motorsports and also get into more HD video stuff with my next camera.
Look at the Canon 7D.
Also, think about renting one before you buy. There are a bunch of websites for that.

Did you mean 24-70mm F2.8 and 70-200F2.8 ? EF-S lenses are meant for the crop sensor cameras, But They are not "Junk". Like everyone else some are better build than other lens line up.
I stepped up to DSLR, when I was shopping around I was dead set on Canon. I forget the model # of the one I was looking at but it was the same basic camara I ended up with, the Nikon 3100. I was at Best Buy & looking at them side by side, the reason I got the Nikon is, it just felt better in my hand. I don't really know much about camaras, but the Nikon 3100 will do anything I'll ever need. The pictures come out just great & it's very easy to use. I'm just starting to play around with shutter speeds & love it. Just my .02

I currently shoot a lot of night images but can't get over how much noise is associated with it! That is one thing I hope to eliminate with a new camera.
This was shot with a 5D MkII and looks much crisper than I can achieve with my current setup..
Hey Xx...nice composition...great photo!

I have owned a TON of SLR cameras as well as DSLR's. I currently shoot an Olympus E-1 but have owned a really nice Canon DSLR with a SWEET lens. I have a very good friend who swears by Nikon.
The one thing I would tell you is this: If you have the $$$, make sure to get a full-frame imaging chip. This is when the chip is basically the size of a 35mm negative/piece of film. (Don't know a better way to describe it.) You will never be sorry about spending more money to get the larger imaging chip. Lens quality is VERY important but Canon and Nikon are neck and neck in this arena. By having a larger imaging chip, you get the full use of those optics.
My $0.02 worth. I'm looking forward to what you are buying. I would buy one myself, but I am busy modding an FJ.......
