We've had the Canon t2i for about 2 years now and are really happy with it. I think there is a newer one out now. I have a son in law with a more expensive Nikon and he is happy with it. Ours also does HD video. When you hook the up to an HD TV then the pics and the videos really are awesome. I'd say either brand is good. Just get as good as you can afford and be sure to pick up a long range zoom lens as well as the one that comes with it. Also you may notice some price differences on what appears to be similar lenses and the difference may be the cheaper ones don't have stabilization on them.

Canon and Nikon make great cameras.
I shoot with a nikon D700.
Thinking about getting the Nikon D800 when it comes out in April.
36.3 MP (great for landscapes) + 1080 video.
Olympus E620
I've been using Olympus cameras since the late 70's -- 35mm OM1 and OM2 SLR, various point and shoot C series, E500 SLR and now the E620SLR. Camera and Zuiko lenses are very good.
It's Nikon all the way for me! From my old Nikon F + FTN meter w AI 50mm f.2 lens to the Nikon F2 + Photomic meter + AI 55mm f1.2 (yes, I said f1.2) lens to my current COOLPIX 5400 digital camera.
Of course my next camera will be a Nikon DSLR - not sure of the model number though, there are so many to choose from!

I figured it would be split down the middle. I'm leaning toward Canon only because I'm used to shooting with one. In reality, the lens makes the camera but I don't want to drop a lot of money on a lens until I've decided if I plan on going with Canon for my next camera...

What are you planning on shooting?
I shoot a lot of automotive (stills) and nature (waterfalls, landscapes, etc..). I would love to start shooting some motorsports and also get into more HD video stuff with my next camera.
