Looking at a couple possible assignments this summer: Beale AFB (north of Sacramento) and Mountain Home AFB, Idaho.
Which place would my FJ like better? I'm kind of liking the Mountain Home scenario. Even though I'm a PA guy, I gotta get out of the DC/Baltimore area.
Who knows. I move few couple years...13 moves so far. Only got about 5 years left until they make me a civilian, so if I land somewhere I like that could be it. For now, I have no idea where I want to hang my hat yet. So far, Colorado has been my favorite stateside assignment. I've done the Pacific and European tours and not big on going overseas at this point.
With this next move, I'm going to factor in wheeling. I'm jealous of these guys with wide open spaces and easy access to off-roading.

If Colorado was your fav, then you'd like Idaho. Talk with Percy, he just recently moved to Boise (based upon my recomendation I might add!) from Vegas.
Especially if this is important - "With this next move, I'm going to factor in wheeling. I'm jealous of these guys with wide open spaces and easy access to off-roading."
I read somewhere that some 70% of Idaho land is designated for public use...or something like that....certainly not that way here in Cali.

Too many dirtbikes to list
The first 35 of my almost 45 years were spent in Northern and Central California. Since then I have lived in West Texas, Southeast Kansas, Houston and am now Calgary. I have been asked to return to California by my company but have zero desire to do so. In fact, today I would rank California at the bottom of the list of places I have lived. Two years ago I bought a vacation/eventual retirement home in North Idaho. Something like 70% of Idaho is public land. I can hunt, fish, ski and 4-wheel minutes from my house there. Also, the cost of living is much lower in Idaho than Northern California, something important short term but especially so long term if you decide to settle there in retirement. For a taste, here's the spring melt looking out of my kitchen window. If I were in your boots I know what I would choose.
Idaho = God's country. It's tough to beat for quality of life. Used to visit my cousin out there and ever since I just drool when I hear "Idaho". Maybe not as much four wheeling terrain as Northern Cali but I'm sure you can find plenty when you start networking with others.
Tough call...I live 30 mins. from Beale...imho, Cali. is more expensive 350k-400k for a decent 2k sq ft. house, it's getting crowded, even hear in the Sac. area (though nothing like SF or LA area) so traffic can suck at times and the home lots are a lot smaller then most places in Idaho. However, we get no snow but I am less than 45 minutes to wheeling/playing in it, less than 4 hours from some of the nations best/challenging trails (Rubicon, Dusy) and Yosemite. Less than 2 hours to either Reno, Tahoe, many great ski resorts, San Fran. or the Ocean. Also within a days distance of Vegas, LA, Death Valley or San Diego. As for trails in Idaho, I'm not familiar with them but have heard there is lots out there. Even though the greenies are on the attack here, on the Sierra Nevadas, there is still vast amounts of 4wd trails, camping and fishing spots. I have been to Boise a couple times and up to Moscow (norther Idaho) a few times as well. It's a beatiful state. Good luck with your decision.
P.S. The trail head getting to this is 55 minutes from my door:
