Work with a Lot of Travel Anyone?

Just had a phone interview for a position that is 75% travel. Anyone do this much travel for work? Does it wear on you?

That is what I have been doing for the last 3.5 yrs. It does not wear on me because it is local travel and I get to come home every night. It's cool not having the boredom of office life. Also driving around you get to listen to a lot of music.

Re: Work with a Lot of Travel Anyone?

yeah...this would be all over the US. basically leave Monday and return Friday for 3 weeks of the month, then a week out of a home office...totally different from my @ss planted in a chair currently for 8 hours. Sounds great but I wonder how it would wear on me

Re: Work with a Lot of Travel Anyone?

I do about 40% travel, all by car. I'm not home about 3-4 nights a month. I love it, never get bored.

Re: Work with a Lot of Travel Anyone?

I did this much travel and more when I worked at I.B.M. At first it's fun. Seeing California, Alaska, The south and so on. But it gets old real quick. No social time ( you better be single without a girlfriend ). I remember coming home at the end of the month and frantically writing my utilitiy bills and such before catching another flight out the next day. It's tough on the body as well. You're basically living out of a suitcase!

I spent 5 years traveling to trade shows. I was on the road about two weeks each month. I enjoyed it for the most part. I did get tired of going the the same type of show (electronics, communications). I enjoyed the travel but I also got tired of going to the same locations. I had to go to Las Vegas alot and I am not much of a gambler so after seeing all the sights I spent alot of evenings enjoying a good book.

Re: Work with a Lot of Travel Anyone?

If you have a family, its super-hard on them. My Dad flew out from Minneapolis every Monday morning and returned home every Friday night (from New York) for 3+ years. My parents ended up in a divorce.

Re: Work with a Lot of Travel Anyone?

6 years in a job that requires I be away from home over 100 days a year. It can be a nightmare or it can be managable, the devil is in the details...

I have "some" flexibility in my travel so that I cna schedule to be home during "some" special occassions, but not all. If I had to be away totally at someone else's call w/ no regard for my personal affairs, that would be tougher to take.

I am away from home only 6 - 8 weekends a year, so I am home for most little league games, etc. and home when my family is home. During the week when they are in school and the wife is working is not so hard on everyone because everyone is focused. When you are gone on weekends and they are doing "personal" stuff, it is tough.

Get yourself some airline credit cards and sign up for every possible airline and hotel chain frequent user program. Pay for everything yourself and get reimbursed, and put all of your expenses on the card. Thatway you benefit from the credit rating you aquire, build points for free flights and hotel stays (to take your family) or get free stuff. Airlins often bump you to better seats and hotels comp mini suites to their high-end users.

Learn to go to the movies or do other activities in the evenings by yourself when on the road. Stay out of the bars or sitting watching TV in your hotel room; use the hotel gym and pool.

If you are married, don't take the job unless you have a strong relationship or wanting a divorce. Being seperated overnight for long periods of time plays havoic with relationships that aren't built solidly on trust and committment.

PM me if you want to chat...

Re: Work with a Lot of Travel Anyone?

thanks guys. I'm leaning toward "no," but it sounds interesting nonetheless. I wish the percentage were more around 40-50% or so. Your input is really appreciated on this. Lots more money too

Re: Work with a Lot of Travel Anyone?

All I can tell you is: If you are going to do it, do it now while you are young and relatively "unencumbered". It's tough (as previously mentioned) to have any kind of social relationships.

I remember writing the name of the city I was staying in on a Post-it atttached the Hotel mirror at night, so I would know where I was when I woke up.

The best part is, I have a lot of good memories and know folks in a lot of cities as a result.
