Real, clean, pure energy already exists. The technology if revealed would cost the oil companys billions if not trillions. A sticker on your FJ that says you support alternative fuels research is a waste of time; the research has already been done. The alternatives are there. You will just never see them. Scarcity = dependancy = control. Same sad play, always.
As a matter of fact I have 2000 on order for next spring.
I have a newfound respect for you. If you've never read it, check out the book "The Man Who Planted Trees" by Jean Giono. A quick read but an inspiring one. The books by Eric Sloane are also good.
As far as the Terrapass is concerned, I think it is a great idea. It throws money in the right direction and lets people be a little more guilt free. Sure everyone is still contributing to the problem but they are also contributing to the solution.
Here's a better idea- Donate the 79.95 to your local church. If you feel guilty about something, then you shouldn't do it. If driving your FJ around leads you to feelings of guilt, sell your FJ, bike to work, and live in some slum downtown near your work. The money you save can be sent to whatever environmental cause you feel is best, and you won't have any guilt.
I clicked on this thread because I thought it might be some cool website that showed four wheeling sites across the country. Dang, its a hippy gathering place- no room for me here.
In the next 7 years, all new and existing power sources being built on the planet will emit more pollution than all the previous years since the beginning of the industrial age.
Giving money to buy emission gasses is like throwing your money into a huge hole. Your following an illusion. It makes sense in concept but in actuality does nothing to change what is happening now or in the future. If you fund companies that provide technology to meet some legal requirement you are basically taking the financial responsibility for complying with a law that has been placed on them to lower emissions and taken it upon yourself to pay for the technology out of your own pocket.
Nothing and no one can stop the demand for energy or the amount of pollution it causes until the population stops its way of life, reverses course, and becomes a very different society than it is today.
Trading emissions is a foolish idea concocted to take you and your money for a long long ride to nowhere. If you feel you need to pay for it. Please do, for your own well being. Planting a tree is a better idea but more importantly will be learning to hunt for food and passing that knowledge along to your children, is an even better idea.
Resources and technology will not save you, because they are not everlasting.

That is an AWSOME idea! Better than trusting your money to an unknown organization. However many of us are not in a position where we can plant 2000 trees. What can we do short of selling our FJ in favor of a bicycle, and living in a hut?
tnegiet... You should start up your own Carbon-offset organization. You might make a profit in reforesting. Of course this is the type of organization I trying to avoid. But there are many environmentally concision people out there who share their money, without doing any research.

I am not as confident that "Free Energy" exists. People can say anything. There have been a lot of people who have made the claim, but nothing that has stood up to scientific review. However I wouldn't be shocked at the oil influanced goverment wants to prevent the discovery of "Free Energy".
It's so tragic that people associate Global Warming and actually doing something about it with being a "liberal" or "hippie". I can tell you straight to your face I'm neither so stereotypes won't explain this problem away.
Another thing that is kind of funny to me...people coming in here to bash Terrapass and yet they know little about the subject. You can always tell because they are the ones saying foolish things like I do not know where my money is being spent, or I wouldn't buy an FJ if I really cared about emissions.
Also, I can give money to charity AND give money to help improve the environment. Maybe some can't afford to do that but I can and will.
As a hard core conservative, I don't always care to see or hear Al Gore speak. But if you are "open minded" you can ignore the face and the voice but listen to the message. An Inconvenient Truth is not a political documentary and doesn't care if you are a Republican or a school teacher or a FJ owner. Taking time to actually "witness" the environment breaking down through images and then admitting that there is a problem is for many, the first step in making change. I guess it is easier and more selfish to just say there is no problem and let others worry about it.

That right there is where the problem lies! In order to listen to someones message, and actually consider its merit, you have to have a little respect for them. After the crying, kicking, screaming, and recounts he demanded, I have zero respect for the man and honestly, I cannot stand the sight of him. Sitting through a two hour dissertation, from Mr. Monotone, is definately out of the question.
