I cannot speak for every deaf person out there, but after conducting a small survey among my friends, in addition to my own experience, the answer is....
.......both. It all depends on the deaf person's background.
I grew up learning how to speak and read lips. I did not learn sign language until I was 19 years old and to this day, I still rely primarily on the verbal method to communicate with other people. Thus, when I read, I say the words out loud in my head. When I dream, I speak in my dreams, but I've also had dreams where I would use sign language only to wake up and realize that I was actually signing in my sleep!
For other deaf people whose primary method of communication is American Sign Language, with little English skills, I've been told that they actually sign in their heads when they read. Same concept as......say a Frenchman that reads French is 100% likely to hear French in his head! Just depends on what your primary method of communication (or language) is.
That being said, I'm off to read a book and try to sign the words in my head to see if it makes a difference.
Thanks !
I often wondered about how deaf persons process written words or somthing in sign or brail.
When I 'm reading , I assign a voice to the person .
Example :When I read what Belly Doc wrote .....I heard Carl Sagans Voice
"We're reconciling the calendar with the position of the earth in it's orbit around the sun, relative to the surrounding stars. We don't exactly make it full circle in 365 spins of the globe (24 hour days).
The clock and the calendar aren't cleanly in agreement. The clock is set based on the earth's rotation on its axis, the calendar is based on the orbit of the earth around the sun. We're lucky that we don't have to clean it up even more!
The rules about leap-year, incidently, are actually a bit more complicated than 1 out of every 4 years... look it up. It's kinda cool! "
Sounds just like Carl Sagan.
After skimming through this thread... I came to the conclusion that It'll be a lot more entertaining if Lucy was in the Sky. I'll report with some question when the said conditions are met(and read this thread to it's completeness)

Does the following diet really help with gallstones:
5 days of fasting except this - drink 2 gallons of a mixture consisting of: 1/4 cup of cayenne pepper, 1 cup of organic lemon juice, 1/4 cup of molasses, the rest 1 gallon of water.
On the evening of the 5th day, 4 hours before bedtime, drink 1 cup of organic olive oil, 1/2 cup of lemon juice then lay on your right side with your right knee up to your chest. The porcelain seat will be your best friend all night. Apparently, this mixture will help lubricate all the pipes and the knee-to-the chest method will help push all the stones out.
My roommate's doc said she has stones, but she prefers to try the alternative rather than have her gallbladder removed.
She got this recipe off the internet and is supposedly supported by holistic doctors.

Summit '08 - Patience is a virtue (but crappy one).
So after 9800 miles, with at least half of those off road.....Why does the passenger side have 90% of the scratches...and all the dents..???
This is for real!
You are programmed to keep it to the right on the road. Now you're avoiding visible obstacles down the driver's side. This rubs you on the passenger's side more often.
I didn't even notice till I had someone else drive my rig up to Crown King and sat on the passenger side. I had to roll up the window.
