It started last night. My detectors are hard wired with battery back-up. They started beeping all at the same time intermittently, like every 60 minutes or so. Not that annoying beep from low batteries either, real beeps.
Can it be from some kind of power surge or something??? It's still doing it this morning.
Could be dust.
When my detector was going off, I read that most smoke detectors have a photo cell that "sees" smoke particulate in the air, and is triggered by those little smoke bits. Dust, apparently, also sets off the photo cell.
Give the detector a quick and gentle run with the vacuum, and all should be well. Worked for me.

(And you thought I was crabby yesterday.
This happened shortly after I moved into my newly built house at 2am. Very annoying. I eventually went to the 24 hour pharmacy and got replacement batteries at 3am. Here's the catch...they are all hard wired but when the battery backup is running low, they emit a beep. The beep is instantly picked up by all the alarms and they all end up chirping in concert. Once I replaced all the batteries, the sound went away. After a short while, one of them started beeping again, so I disconnected it from the hard wire (pulled it off the wall by disconnecting it from the mounting bracket) and had the one unit replaced by the builder. Problem solved!
Good luck, but replace all the batteries first. If it's still a problem then figure out which unit it is by disconnecting one at a time...wait...and repeat until you find the culpret. Replace if necessary.
Loosing sleep over a bad 9volt sucks...hope this works and you are able to get a good nights rest!

Exact thing happened to me, new batteries; problem solved. If that doesn't fix your problem then do what Jimmy said and disconnect them one at a time and replace the offending unit. They do go bad occasionally, had to replace the unit in my basement that the previous owner of the house just left disconnected. I had no idea it was disconnected until I accidentally bumped it and luckily I was able to catch it. Soon as I plugged that one in, all the alarms were screaming "SMOKE - FIRE!" along with the squealing.
Ya, mine did that too a couple of times. Usually in the winter at 3 AM when the house was cooled off. Battery voltage dropped with the temp. So I turned the heat up, they stopped chirping. Next day got 2 sets of 9V batteries, installed one set, kept the others for the next time.

Now to stop the voices that keep me awake.
I was wondering why it only happens at night. I haven't heard it since I got home more than two hours ago.

We had a stretch of cold weather, where one night, I hear chirping, swap one battery, everything's okay... two days later, same thing, swap a different battery... wait 2 more days, swap another battery... sigh... weather warms up, no more chirps.
Finally bought lithium 9 volts for the fire alarms (lithiums don't bottom out due the mild temperature swings inside a house). Even though they are expensive, they won't wake you up at 2 a.m. unless they really are out of juice.
