Re: How to destroy a perfectly good holiday weekend
I have a question for you guys. If I buy an IPOD to copy my CD's onto, what else do I need in the way of software, cables, etc.? I have an older Dell Inspiron laptop with XP. I have regular and USB II ports and a few others that I'm not quite sure what they are used for and the ports for a printer and monitor. I have a DVD/CD player/burner also. Thanks. Jim

I hear you, man...bought a video Ipod for my wife for Christmas, and after just getting the thing to run, I cursed Steve Jobs and vowed never to buy another ipod again.

You shouldn't need anything else. When you buy the iPod, it comes with a usb cable and a CD with iTunes on it. Just to clarify, you actually copy your CD's into iTunes, then when you connect your iPod the music is copied (not moved) into the iPod automatically. Once you get up and running, you can choose to copy particular songs or playlists, but the default is to copy all songs to the iPod.
I would recommend updating iTunes as soon as you get the iPod. They update the software pretty regularly, so the version online is probably going to be newer than the version that gets shipped with the iPod. You can download iTunes for free, and read more about it here Apple - iTunes - iTunes Overview

just my extra 0.02...
most people don't think about it at the time of buying their iPod, but make sure you have the free space on your computer to store all your music/videos/pics/podcasts.... if you buy a 60GB video iPod, make sure you have that 60GB on your computer- or you can upgrade your computer or just get an external drive to save from using up all your free space....
or you could just not put your entire CD collection on your iPod/computer
